An actor’s take on storytelling in employer branding
Storytelling goes beyond just film and TV…

In Episode 110, I’m joined with actor, writer, voice-over artist (and old school friend!), Des Yankson. We chatted about Des’ experience in the film & TV industry, the elements that make a great story, and how organisations can take inspiration from traditional film and TV to elevate their employer branding content.

How can organisations build an effective in-house marketing model?
Many organisations choose to switch from agency to in-house when it comes to their marketing.
While some elements benefit from the in-house model, it’s important to consider where agencies can bring real value.
So, how can organisations build an in-house model that’s profitable, while solving the right problems?
We’ve been catching up with David Angus recently to discuss all things business strategy, and in Episode 108, we delve deeper into the switch from agency to in-house, the power of fractional CMOs, and how agencies can proposition themselves in an ever-changing business landscape.
Dave is Chief Strategy Officer of Curated and an experienced marketer so he’s able to bring some real-life experience and insight.

This productivity app will help you level up your employer branding content
Getting productivity right is the key to creative thinking IMO! The productivity space has exploded in the past 3 years to help us find focus and do quality work. And the tech that's available now can really help anyone in employer branding and marketing. So I jumped back into the rabbit hole of productivity apps in January and it's really helped - this episode shares my favourite app and approach that works for me. Productivity is often seen as "getting lots done" - but it's really about the quality of the work done. The focus we find. And this is particularly important for happiness at work. Shout out to Sunsama whose good daily planning vibes are helping me continually improve my approach to productivity! And thanks to Akiflow for also standing out in the sea of apps in this space!

I was a little bit nervous...I'd wanted to have a marketing podcast for at least 5 years and now was the time to finally do it. I knew I had plenty to share but part of you always wonders if anyone will care to listen.
But I hit record and just started talking...and have loved every one of the 66 episodes I've published since.
I'm now lucky enough to have over 50,000 streams and...I've got my first sponsor 🥳️

England v Iran - World Cup Watch Along: Southgate, Leadership and changing brand England
We're chatting leadership while watching the footie! Because leadership is a massive part of changing any team, whether in employer branding or in international football.
I did a watch along of England's World Cup opener against Iran with Sean Hagger yesterday.
Sean is a leadership consultant and we chat about the transformation of the England team from Euros flops in 2016 to World Cup Semi-Finalists and European Championships Finalists - all in the space of 5 years.
What's the key to this success? The strength and depth in talent...? Yes, for sure. But it's also down to Gareth Southgate's leadership.
We talk about leadership and the fortunes of the England football team over the decades and what Gareth Southgate has done to lead the change in Brand England.

LinkedIn Rant! The issue with empty content & what people get wrong about personal branding, with Mariano Aragunde from IBM
Let's talk LinkedIn! Crying CEOs, fake personal stories, obvious motivational statements...they're all part of the personal branding trend that's all too often driven by corner-cutting consultants. And many would say it's leading to empty content that doesn't reflect the true meaning of personal branding.
This is certainly the opinion of Mariano Aragunde, Digital Leader for Recruitment Marketing at IBM. He used to be a big fan of LinkedIn, and so did the IT community that he's an active member of. But, for them, it's changed, and not for the better.
And I tend to agree. LinkedIn is at its best when it's producing content that's truly adding value to the community.

How to build a community that's actually a community with Mariano Aragunde at IBM
In this episode, we're talking communities with Mariano Argunde - Digital Leader for Recruitment Marketing at IBM.
Mariano is involved in a big IT community in Argentina that boasts tens of thousands of members who are highly active on platforms from Discord to in-person conferences. So he's a great person to chat with for sure.
The word community is well-used in the world of marketing. Social media has provided a great opportunity to build communities and brands stake claim to the word all too often - But are they nothing more than a means of distributing sales messages? And are talent communities just glorified destinations for job alerts?
There's no doubt that communities are full of potential in marketing, but what does it take to build a true community?
We talk about what community is, and isn't. And what a thriving community looks like.

How marketing agencies can adapt and grow
Pitching Creativity & The Ideas Graveyard
Creativity is at the heart of great agencies, and it takes a lot of work to get it right. Especially when it comes to pitching.
For every idea that wins, several don't see the light of day. Do they just end up in The Ideas Graveyard?
In this episode I chat with Pete Rice, Director of A Different Kind of Animal Ltd, and an Associate Creative Consultant who has been an Executive Creative Director, and Head of Brand. He's forged his creative career in ad land for 30 years, so he's well placed to talk about pitching, creativity and The Ideas Graveyard.
We cover a range of topics:
- The pitch process...is it broken? Is there a better way?
- Agency <> Clients - finding the right partnerships.
- How to be a great client.
- Does any idea truly die, or does it become something else?
- How do you create ideas that hit the mark?
- Three routes or one...?
- Creating ideas at scale to find the one that works.
- Balancing creative theory with applied creative.
Thanks for the chat, Pete!
And thanks for listening.

Empathetic Employer Brand Lead...this is the description on Priti Soni's LinkedIn profile. Empathy is often underrated or misunderstood in the business of promoting employers and their job opportunities. But it's a true super power in employer branding - is there a truer superpower to have?
Priti has worked in the world of recruitment for over 15 years and she was recently Recruitment Marketing & Employer Brand Strategy at Publicis Sapient. And she's passionate about the importance of empathy!
Empathy is the key to the next evolution of the employer branding, so this is a chat worth listening in on.
Thanks.

Transforming Employer Marketing Together: Sharing experience, opinion and advice
I created the Employer Content Marketing Pod because I fundamentally believe that employer branding / employer marketing is a business-critical function.
Only 21% of employees are engaged with their work - that means $8 trillion in lost productivity [Gallup's State of the Global Workplace 2022] - so more needs to be done. Attracting and retaining the right talent is THE number 1 challenge facing organistions. And we're lucky to work in a space that can really play its part!
Subscribe to The Employer Content Marketing Drop and you'll get podcast episodes, articles, online chats, and events from the world of Employer Content Marketing.

Why this newsletter?
Content marketing transforms employer marketing, and I want it to be adopted by as many organisations as possible. But it can't just be through the work I do with my clients! It's got to be through the experiences, advice, and opinions shared on the Employer Content Marketing Pod. Better together, and all that!
Thanks for listening.
