Farms Advice Podcast Farm Yarns dives into the guest to give you the listener a behind the scenes look into what drives some of Australia's leaders and innovators in Australian agriculture. On this episode we have Simon Matear from Wagga Wagga who runs a cattle enterprise with his family. Whilst having the implementation skills of getting agtech to work for them, we will dive into see what drives him, what his morning routine looks like and how it may differ or be similar to yours.

Mostly selling through feedlots, processors as well as the surplus stock going into the restocker market.

This week on farm yards we have Lachlan down from CSIRO. He is a postdoctoral research are studying microbes and how they can impact the way a crop is grown both positively and negatively. So hopefully that you can get something out of this episode one element that you can use as your own motivation, use the same resources that they do and improve your own enterprise at home and your own personal development that's what it's all about. 

G'day and welcome to this weeks episode on the Farms Advice podcast. Jumping back into our Farm Yarns with Lachlan Dow from CSIRO. We dive in to see how microbes are impacting Australian agriculture both in a positive and negative format and how as farmers on the ground can identify where our soils are going wrong and how we can replicate the soils that are improving the years of our crops.  Lachlan Tao is a postdoctoral research with CSIRO and is enabling Australian farmers from his own research of how we can improve the soils that grow the crops of today with this year we are actually having the biggest year on record it's estimated that over 23,000,000 ha are planted. So why did we get Lachlan Dow onto the podcast he is a biologist chemist specialising in photo synthetic organisms and bacteria is previous works been included with chemical ecology advanced microscopic photosynthesis analytical chemistry and synthetic chemistry what has he done within the science field and how is playing out in his role currently down in Canberra.

G'day farmers, this week we yarn with Daniel Fischl from Eartrumpet Consulting and Padardis as a form agtech for the viticulture industry. Daniel opens up his thoughts to be challenged and looking for outside information. When you put 50 winemakers in a room you're going to receive very similar answers. He looks upon the indigenous ways of managing landscapes and water through 1000s of years of knowledge being built up.

G'day farmers, welcome to this weeks episode where we dive into agtech within vineyards but with all the similar concepts and values of broadacre and livestock farmers. We have Daniel Fischl on from Padardis, which is a new agritech company derived from years of research in the lab and now more so in the vineyards. Daniel is fighting a much needed problem within viticulture and how vineyards can save time, costs and preserve their flavours by utilising their toolkit on their own enterprise. 

With a cracking example in this episode we find out that the amount of watering either increase or decrease can dramatically impact the flavour, taste and value of the wine on offer from the vines. We dive into who the person is behind the audio with this yarn and see who inspires them, where they find the motivation and the resources that up skill them. Gavin O'Brien started out on sheep stations in the Riverina of Southern NSW.

From his morning routine of looking out the window to see what he's dealing with. Just like most farmers, if it's rained overnight the kettle goes on and out measuring the mm. To his first memory on farm dealing with Suffolk sheep with the old faithful sheep dog. Listen to find out the full story. 

Just like others in and outside the industry Gavin is inspired by those who have "made something their own, and taken it to the next level". Relating this back to Australian agriculture, we have the top 10% producers who have the right attitude towards growing their agribusiness. FMD Definition: The Farm Management Deposits (FMD) scheme allows eligible primary producers to set aside pre-tax income from their primary production activities during years of high income. The income can then be drawn in future years as needed. Primary producers can include FMDs as part of their risk-management strategy.

Simon Foley joined Agworld as General Manager for Australia, New Zealand and South Africa in September 2014. Simon has 25 years experience in broadacre grain farming systems extending from in field production agronomics to farm and business management. Prior to joining Agworld, Simon consulted to farm businesses across WA and held senior management roles in a boutique funds management company focussed on agricultural investments. He holds an Agricultural Science (Hons) degree from the University of Western Australia.

It is as diverse as it gets from the Tasmanian soils proving their worth with the types of crops that Michael farms alongside his family and his one time full-time worker. From his wheat to potatoes paddocks we dive into what drives his operation. In his area potatoes are king! With the recent 50mm it's a bit short of their usual rainfall of 1250mm each year.

Michael had thought that moving to Agworld would be a good decision for his farm to reduce the amount of paper work when looking at compliance for high valued crops and also ensuring he knows what has happened and what activities have been.

• Simplot Peas (Green Peas)

• Ground Beans

Fun fact: Their average paddock would be around 10ha and they hold the record for highest yielding wheat crop in Australia at 13.1 tonne/ha.

Theunis Smit is working with the Macadamia Farm Management crew of 300+ workers at any one time. With this workforce comes a lot of responsibility on the individual but also on the managers. Theunis was biting at the bit when he had the opportunity to bring on a piece of agtech that would go on to help with their operating of Macadamia farms across the East Coast of Australia. As they're dealing with investors, they want to know where there money is going so inventory is a big one for them. Also looking at how they can improve their orchards and breakdown any inconsistency.

What I liked about this story specifically was the way he dealt with the employees adopting the agtech. He was able to get around the barrier by providing the tools each tractor needed to get the job done. He went and bought every one an iPad in order to utilise the products straight away and that they wouldn't see an adoption lag and then early adopters. This has brought the company together and allowed for greater transparency on and off-farm.

Kicking off the second episode for 2022 with our recent podcast partnership with APEN 2022 Conference. The Australasia-Pacific Extension Network that looks at this years theme of “facilitating change and the Opportunity from Disruption”. This sums up what we’ve been through in the last 5 years with droughts, floods, fires and pandemics to really spice things up. A trying time for farmers as the supply chain has been tested 10x times over.

I’m really excited to bring to you a selection of the finest guests from the APEN network and to kick us off is Ruth Nettle. Her work in Dairy, the Cooperative Joint Venture in Capacity building and in projects such as the Rural Research and Development for Profit – private sector project – has encompassed very practically based projects which look at assisting change on farms as well as developing extension profession and capacity. – hence, supporting APEN’s mission in promoting the role of extension in rural change.
