Episode 0010: News and Journalism and Media Platforms

Show Notes
  • Host: Dan Hugo
  • Summary: These are interesting times, particularly right now, with so many layoffs not only in the tech sector, but at major news media outlets. The definition of what News really is may vary per person, and who and where each person gets their news varies as well. Is there still room for investigative journalism and authoritative information outlets?

One Small Step For News Reporting

One Small Step For News Reporting

News is reported as stories for humans most of the time. Not so true when it comes to weather, sports, finance, and anything where there are tangible facts which might be compared and referred to in the story. Make no mistake, though, news is about telling a story and evoking a response, especially when tabulated facts aren't so clearly available.

(Keep Feeling) Vaccination

(Keep Feeling) Vaccination

Has it been a year already? The theme of this show is generally failure analysis, or as I say from time to time, a discussion about what works, what doesn't, and what we do about it. The global pandemic brought by SARS-CoV-2 and covid-19 is going to be a treasure trove, so to speak, of failure analysis, from which we should all learn a great many things...

The first presentation I came across by Nickolas Means, really well done and interesting, on YouTube

Who Destroyed Three Mile Island

The book that Nickolas refers at near the end of the presentation, on Amazon

The Field Guide to Understanding 'Human Error'

The pandemic visualization that launched a world of headlines and amateur analysis

Johns Hopkins Pandemic Map

As well a newly-available data view on Vaccinations, let us see how this unfolds

Johns Hopkins Vaccination Data

A favorite resources for authoritative, intelligent discourse on the state of affairs as quickly as it has been changing, available via YouTube and as podcasts, TWiV in particular...

Microbe.tv

The point of this show is to explore topic arcs over time, and for better or worse the top-level topic that is the global covid-19 pandemic will certainly provide fodder for discussion and learning for years, and episodes, to come...

Economeering

Economeering

You cannot talk about economy without being an economist, can you?

Actually, you can, and if you've ever added "engineer" to the end of whatever it is you do, you know where this is going.

  • Is MMT the next big thing?
  • Is supply side economics ever going to work for anyone in the lower 90%?
  • Universal Basic Income vs Job Guarantees, do they make sense?
  • Economists like Macro, but the people make the economy, how about some Micro?
  • And so much more as we take on this huge topic into the future...

A few books mentioned

  • The Deficit Myth by Stephanie Kelton
  • Arguing With Zombies by Paul Krugman
  • The Case For a Jobs Guarantee by Pavlina R Tcherneva

Several references as well to Prof Mark Blyth, proper links to some excellent presentations (available via YouTube) coming for the next lap around the Economeering topic...

This one is vast so while this is the planting of seeds for what is likely several topic arcs, it did not get into so much of the what works and what doesn't facets, which will follow as we focus on particular issues with, one might hope, particular guests and audience in our interactions.

Note this episode is posting on New Years Eve (UTC-8), just in time to wrap it up with a 2020 sticker. Listen for Meta episodes about the show itself, wherein we can figure out how best to interact with people in live streams.

As with all topic arcs, this is To Be Continued...

Show Zero

Show Zero

Show Zero is the first episode of the first show in the Return to Digital Media. A former podcaster, I (Dan Hugo) am an engineer, technology nerd, and eager learner looking beyond bickering and sniping on social media, to discuss what is working and what isn't, and how we can deal with both.

This first episode of FFS is solo and introductory, I look forward to guest and listener interaction in the usual and unusual places...

Look for FFStalk...
