Episode 0024: College or Other and Continuous Learning
- Host: Dan Hugo
- Summary: The news today is awash with strife at our college campuses, surely a sign of the end times, so long as we believe that a vanishingly small population of students are world-wise enough to represent their generation… in the mean time, where does college and higher learning fit into the near term?

Episode 0023: Forget Good If Good Enough Will Do
- Host: Dan Hugo
- Summary: Many engineers, maybe more the ones from the old days but I hope not, will try to find a root cause for some problem and see about fixing it. In an age of personal economics, solving an immediate problem and calling that Done seems to be the new thing, and that always comes back around. Always.

- Host: Dan Hugo

Work Part 2
Essential work for less-than-essential pay, and these are the workers who will be replaced early in our automated present and future. The entire Work topic should extend far into the distance and out of view to left and right, it is so cast and rife for discussion...

Work Part 1
Have you been working from home? Does your workplace follow old school organization structures, or maybe they're trying out a New Way to engage their employees? Would you rather work from home, for yourself, into the future? Hmm.

Perhaps Sir Isaac Newton said it better. He certainly said it in English, and so it was a little bit meta on top of its other implications...

Computer as Copilot
Should consumers of data generated, curated, and presented by our computer overlords be made aware of the nature of those overlords, or are we destined to receive what we are given without any clear idea what, how, and why? This is the beginning of a very long discussion, guests welcome...

MyTubes
The internets present us all with fabulous opportunities to express ourselves, communicate with friends and family around the world in real time or over years or both, and to conduct business out of our homes (whether we're stuck inside them or not). While the advancements in real technology and impressive gee-whiz chrome appear to work, what doesn't might end up being yours and my ability to do all of these nice things the way we want to, rather than the ways for-profit interests allow us to.

Innovation and Co-creation
Have you ever made a product or service, launched it into the market, and discovered it was not what people wanted? Have you ever watched a product or service which you need and have been waiting for, crash and burn because it didn't match the needs of people like you? Is there a way to tackle that before it happens? Hint: Yes.

One Small Step For News Reporting
News is reported as stories for humans most of the time. Not so true when it comes to weather, sports, finance, and anything where there are tangible facts which might be compared and referred to in the story. Make no mistake, though, news is about telling a story and evoking a response, especially when tabulated facts aren't so clearly available.

Modern Collaboration
Catching the tail end of the 2021 Memorial Day Weekend, wherein we all gave pause to consider the sacrifices made by some of the best-trained and most capable collaborators the world has ever know, the Men and Women of the United States Military.
Now, let us begin a conversation about the rest of us and how we can use the tools at our disposal to work together...

Delivering Big Delta II
When at first you don't get your point across in a completely coherent manner, try (try) again? Well, the real goal was to establish the underlying and unifying theme of the show itself, to examine the all-to-easy-to-say expression "Change the World" in the context of the tag line, looking at what works and what doesn't (and what we might do about it, don't forget that part).
Show Notes Newsletter
Show notes for FFS Talk podcast episodes are published on Substack in newsletter form, delivered to your inbox and accessible with your web browser, with more room to expand and expound than is available in RSS feed items.

Delivering Big Delta
At long last, a return to production, with an episode that is essentially The Show... when we talk about "What Works, What doesn't, and what we can do about both," we are talking about changing the world at some scale, and that means Delivering Big Delta...
Show Notes are now coming at you in Newsletter Form! Trying to fit everything into the RSS feed is not a great experience on either end, so there is an FFS Talk show notes newsletter on Substack!

(Keep Feeling) Vaccination
Has it been a year already? The theme of this show is generally failure analysis, or as I say from time to time, a discussion about what works, what doesn't, and what we do about it. The global pandemic brought by SARS-CoV-2 and covid-19 is going to be a treasure trove, so to speak, of failure analysis, from which we should all learn a great many things...
The first presentation I came across by Nickolas Means, really well done and interesting, on YouTube
Who Destroyed Three Mile Island
The book that Nickolas refers at near the end of the presentation, on Amazon
The Field Guide to Understanding 'Human Error'
The pandemic visualization that launched a world of headlines and amateur analysis
As well a newly-available data view on Vaccinations, let us see how this unfolds
Johns Hopkins Vaccination Data
A favorite resources for authoritative, intelligent discourse on the state of affairs as quickly as it has been changing, available via YouTube and as podcasts, TWiV in particular...
The point of this show is to explore topic arcs over time, and for better or worse the top-level topic that is the global covid-19 pandemic will certainly provide fodder for discussion and learning for years, and episodes, to come...

Meta: Welcome Back
First meta episode, about the show itself! It has been a while...
A quick touch on a few things that have gone on since the most recent previous episode, including vaccination and a weekly podcast (in addition to this one) that has confirmed it for sure... guests or co-hosts make for better discussion.
As well, there will be live stream discussion and text, it is the only interesting way to have discussions about the topics on the agenda.
Yet another (third!) podcast is entering production, domain names got, websites, next, and that's just getting started!
do not joinClubHouse.
Do check out the HugoFloss podcast, and watch for QuogglingSand...
Episode art inspired by the fact that this entire show is produced in Las Vegas, Nevada. The sign says Welcome, but stick with the podcast, stay home and wear your mask when you don't. We aren't out of this yet!

Economeering
You cannot talk about economy without being an economist, can you?
Actually, you can, and if you've ever added "engineer" to the end of whatever it is you do, you know where this is going.
- Is MMT the next big thing?
- Is supply side economics ever going to work for anyone in the lower 90%?
- Universal Basic Income vs Job Guarantees, do they make sense?
- Economists like Macro, but the people make the economy, how about some Micro?
- And so much more as we take on this huge topic into the future...
A few books mentioned
- The Deficit Myth by Stephanie Kelton
- Arguing With Zombies by Paul Krugman
- The Case For a Jobs Guarantee by Pavlina R Tcherneva
Several references as well to Prof Mark Blyth, proper links to some excellent presentations (available via YouTube) coming for the next lap around the Economeering topic...
This one is vast so while this is the planting of seeds for what is likely several topic arcs, it did not get into so much of the what works and what doesn't facets, which will follow as we focus on particular issues with, one might hope, particular guests and audience in our interactions.
Note this episode is posting on New Years Eve (UTC-8), just in time to wrap it up with a 2020 sticker. Listen for Meta episodes about the show itself, wherein we can figure out how best to interact with people in live streams.
As with all topic arcs, this is To Be Continued...
Last Mile and Downtown Project
The first planting of topic arc seeds, to expound on topics, what works, and what does not, and what we can do about it.
Connecting the Last Mile, typically associated with delivery of goods and services from a local hub or central office to a destination at a business or residence, but today arguably including delivery of virtual goods and services via the internet including the ordering, tracking, and customer service aspects of those physical last mile deliveries.
How does the Last Mile relate to the Downtown Project, the effort in the Downtown Las Vegas area to change and uplift the energy and entrepreneurial spirit of the locale with some of the ingredients to transform a city into a Tech Hub.
What works about the Last Mile, and didn't work about the Downtown Project, and a few points in between, these are two great topics we hope to revisit with ongoing conversation with people who were there and did that, and where we can go next with what we've learned.
Specific reference to a Tech Cocktail talk given by Bambi Francisco in September 2014 in Downtown Las Vegas about this very thing, and the eight building blocks needed to make a Tech Hub.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wrcgKOQqCBk
Special thanks to Dan Gunn for an original riff that is the current intro music, and to Phil, Mark, Bryan, and Pete for their respective Exclamations. We encourage participation from our listeners over time so that we may include you in the production.
Show Zero
Show Zero is the first episode of the first show in the Return to Digital Media. A former podcaster, I (Dan Hugo) am an engineer, technology nerd, and eager learner looking beyond bickering and sniping on social media, to discuss what is working and what isn't, and how we can deal with both.
This first episode of FFS is solo and introductory, I look forward to guest and listener interaction in the usual and unusual places...
Look for FFStalk...
