Your Brain on Exercise: New Science of Mental Health and Why it Matters
Mental health is a big deal. A really big deal: mental illness impacts 1 in 3 young people and 1 in 5 overall, with the highest suicide rates among middle age and elderly. It’s costing the US economy $193 billion each year, and only 43% of those with a mental illness receive care. Far fewer men, young people, and minorities receive care. Limited access to quality care, stigma around seeking out care, and more all influence this.
—
Both aerobic exercise and strength training have been shown to have effect sizes similar to pharmaceutical treatments and traditional care (both vital parts of the puzzle, but not being accessed by a majority of the people who need it). Exercise and non stigmatized lifestyle interventions are needed to improve quality of life for these people.
—
In the most recent research, systemic inflammation and stress play a big role. How exercise exactly helps seems to be in part from the kynurenine pathway of the amino acid tryptophan. Higher levels of kynurenine are produced and cross the blood brain barrier during high inflammation and the result is neurotoxic, leading to depression and schizophrenia symptoms. During exercise, KAT, an enzyme that negates this effect, is produced in skeletal muscle. The fitter you are, the more robust this response, though it improves quickly with training.

About Zach:
Zach Shlien is a personal trainer and founder of the corporate wellness solution, PostureBreak. PostureBreak helps office workers get up and get unstuck with exercises and muscle activation movements to promote physical activity, proper posture and increased energy levels from the effects of low-intensity exercise. Zach is a certified personal trainer, Precision Nutrition Certified, Kettlebell Certified, and Functional Movement Screen Certified.
Zach took a brief time away from personal training to explore the corporate world from 2015-2017. During this time, Zach began to feel his body slowly get engulfed by sitting disease. His shoulders started rounding forward, his neck became creaky and his low back started to ache. Because of these observations, he started employing personal training techniques and strategies during the workday to help him feel better and fight the negative effects of sitting. His co-workers were intrigued and asked what he was doing and if he could teach them similar techniques. That is when the lightbulb turned on and Zach knew he was destined to teach these tools and strategies to the masses and help fight the negative effects of sitting and sedentary behavior while at work.
