Ep. 29 Fix your Hormones with Integrative Medicine
Dr. Elena Alawa, osteopathic board-certified physician in internal medicine, functional medicine, and bioidentical hormone therapy shares tips on how to embrace a natural lifestyle, prioritise gut health, and treat chronic illness in a more holistic way. The idea is not to diss conventional medicine but to integrate holistic and naturopathic medicine. We also discuss the difference in male and female physicians in treating women’s health issues.
Guest Bio:
I suffered with freezing frontal migraines with transitory loss of vision, mood swings rivaling tornados, and panic attacks I have never experienced before. After a neurology evaluation, a brain MRI and many serum tests, I was told that I am probably going through early perimenopause and it’s just ‘normal’ to experience these symptoms, after all, we women are blessed with so many things we are taught to take in stride.
So, I embarked on a personal journey to further my medical training and find out the why’s and the how’s to help my transition. Through the training I received and the skills I acquired, I was able to regain my own self and now, in turn, I am able to help you.

Ep 02: Thriving with Mental Health in Spoonie Life- Mental Health Awareness Month Special
The Spoon Theory developed by Christine Miserandino defines how a person living with chronic illness manages their energy. It explains how chronic illness warriors only have a certain amount of energy to extend to activities of daily life illustrated by spoons. You must consider how your chronic illness affects not only your energy, but also how that energy can impact your mental health as well.
The National Institute of Health states that 168 million adults reported depression. The CDC states 1 in 5 people have a mental health condition and 1 in 20 will have a serious mental health condition in the U.S.
Research has shown that depression and fatigue have both been associated with increased activation of the immune system. Inflammation has been shown to cause changes in the brain that result in mental health symptoms. Mental illness has been said to activate inflammation and autoimmune disease. People are often treated with anti-depressants to reduce inflammation.
What can you do as a Spoonie to use and conserve our energy in a way that promotes mental health? Listen to this episode to learn what has helped Mayia and I, and what we recommend based on our experiences.
Review of Episode (time stamped):
2:21 - Mayia Warren shares her mental health journey while living with chronic migraine disease, the second hypermobility spectrum disorder, and oculocutaneous albinism.
7:18 - We discuss the spoon theory and how it relates to mental health.
11:21- Mayia explains how she conserves her energy, prioritizes mental health and her non-negotiables.
21:25- We discuss the impact of toxic positivity and negativity, and how to find balance for mental health as a Spoonie.
22:00 We provide tips based on what has worked for us personally to manage our mental health and improve mindset.
Guest Bio:
Mayia Warren utilizes several platforms with the strategic purpose of creatively advocating. On YouTube, she creates video content centered around bringing awareness to disability, invisible disability and oculocutaneous albinism. She does this through the use of spoken word pieces, shorts, original music, and the video installments of her Better Not Bitter Podcast. As an advocate, she recognizes that it is impossible to know it all, but it's possible to grow through amplifying the voices of those who share different experiences related to disability and chronic health conditions.
