The Journey with Jared

The Journey with Jared

By Jared Salekin
Starting with a quarter life crisis and ending with hitting the reset button on my life, I found myself questioning everything that I thought I knew. Documenting this quest for answers through a podcast I explore topics on mental health, self improvement, and much more.
I do this through talking to others about their journeys (Journeys), deep dives into specific topics (Pit Stops), and sharing other conversations that I’m a part of.

How Men think about Love, Belonging, and Connection | Journey 34 w/ Alex Holmes
On this episode, I'm joined by Alex Holmes, the author of "Time to Talk: How men think about love, belonging, and connection". Alex is a student psychotherapist and works as an existential mental health coach. He also hosts the podcast; "Time to Talk with Alex Holmes".  We begin our conversation by discussing existential psychotherapy and how it differs from traditional psychotherapy. Next, we talk about the importance of not comparing yourself to others, and how to quiet your inner critic. Alex then dives into his love for words, how it led to his book, and asks the question of “What does it mean to be a man?” Do men want to have vulnerable conversations? Is it just a matter of creating a safe space? What does a safe space look like exactly? Lastly, what brings you hope? Links to Alex’s website, Instagram, and podcast! She has interviewed people such as Mary Walsh from This Hour Has 22 Minutes, Deborah DiGiovanni (a stand-up comedian,) and Theo Fleury, among others. We talk about her path towards becoming the Unashamed Alcoholic, how Bobby Ryan and an anonymous letter to the editor started everything. We then move into red flags, the origins of her thought processes surrounding drinking, and sobriety – how it’s not discussed in our society and how it’s assumed that everyone drinks until someone says they don’t. We also discuss normalization as the antidote to shame, how vulnerability strengthens relationships as well as helps to weed out the connections that no longer serve us. Finally, we discuss what to do if you realize that you’re struggling, how to take that next step, and how important it is to share your battles with another person. Lawyer, coach and author, Kathryn Burmeister joins me on the podcast this week to share her story.  While working as a personal injury lawyer in Georgia, the managing partner of Kathryn's firm committed suicide. Navigating Body Image Issues as a Man | Pit Stop 14
Body image is something that I have struggled with for as long as I can remember, and hold a lot of shame around. I felt extremely lonely, as I didn't think any other men went through it. For whatever reason it seems to be that we are told it's not something that men should struggle with, or even acknowledge.  I still remember the moment Andy shared that he also struggles with body image issues at a King's of Hearts event. The weight that was lifted off of my shoulders was enormous, finally the feelings of loneliness started to go away. As I've been a part of more of these types of conversations, it has amazed me at how many people go through this alone. This is the reason why I wanted to have the conversation, and hopefully with more conversations like this, it will become a topic that we all pay more attention to.
