Stories from South Place

By Jessica Morales

There’s a quote that says: “the most extraordinary thing in the world is an ordinary man and an ordinary woman and their ordinary children.” Stories from South Place will highlight the beauty of this sentiment because that’s exactly what host, Jessica Morales, wants to do — highlight all of the ordinary because it is truly extraordinary. Each one of us has a unique, special, God-given story and it’s a joy to be able to share it. Welcome to the Morales home, nicknamed the "South Place." We hope you'll feel like you're sitting in our living room, enjoying great stories from a new friend.

Gift Guides COMING SOON!

Gift Guides COMING SOON!

Hi everyone! It’s been a minute since I’ve been sitting in the studio to podcast. A LOT has been happening over here with my business, my husband, Jason’s, business, our family, and more. We are excited about it all, but it got REALLY busy there for a season and I really just had to make the decision to let a few things go. As much as I LOVE podcasting, it’s not what supports my family, at least not right now (hint hint, go visit my Patreon and share with a friend, haha!). But because of that, it had to be one of the things that got pushed aside for a season. Anyway, I’m now at a place where we’re back in a good routine and I’m so excited to share a few upcoming things with you.
In the month of November, I’ll have several specials guest sit down with me to share some of their favorite items that would make great gifts for Christmas! I’ll also have a highlight reel of all of the makers from Season 2 and maybe a few little promos if you’re thinking about purchasing an item from them for Christmas! Overall, it’s going to be so much fun and truly is exactly what I’d be doing if I were sitting on my couch chatting with friends in the month of November, haha! So, be sure to check back on Tuesday for the first installment of the Stories from South Place Gift Guide!

Episode 4 — Melanie's Story :: Life a high school teacher & bride

In our fourth, and last episode of Stories from Quarantine, Jason and I are joined by our friend, Melanie Nonnemacher. Melanie is a high school teacher who taught all seniors this school year! She shares with us what it's been like to have the remainder of the school year go to an e-learning platform, what that means for her students, and some of the hard realities for seniors in this season of quarantine.

Melanie is also engaged, and her wedding was scheduled for March 21, 2020. Unfortunately, she and her fiancé had to postpone their wedding until the summer, and we talk about how heartbreaking that decision was, but also what she's learned through it all.

We are so thankful to Melanie for sharing her quarantine story and perspective with us, as it's much different than our experience. It was hard to hear some of the realities for her students and what this quarantine and abrupt ending to their schooling has meant for them, and prompted me to pray for students who are in a similar situation.

Episode 3 — Ashley & Jared's Story :: Life as Newlyweds

In our third episode of Stories from Quarantine, Jason and I are joined by our friends, Ashley and Jared King. The Kings got married on March 15, 2020, literally right in the nick of time! Jason was their wedding videographer and he actually had two more weddings in March that got postponed due to the pandemic. We like to joke with Ashley and Jared that they threw us all a big quarantine party - we're super thankful :)

In this episode, Ashley and Jared share their experience about having their wedding right as everything was shutting down, how they came to the conclusion to postpone their honeymoon, and what it's been like for them since then. Both Ashley and Jared have unique careers for this time, and we enjoyed getting to dive into that some!

I’m so thankful for these newlyweds sharing their story with us! They are close friends of ours and it was hard to talk on the phone and not just invite them over to sit around the table with us and catch up! We long for that day though, and pray it comes soon.

Also, Jared owns a pest control business and we just had him come out to spray for mosquitos. If you're in the market for a pest control company, make sure to check out his company here: Inspire Pest Control.

BONUS EPISODE — Brighten & Grady's Story :: Life as brother and sister stuck at home with their mom who asks too many questions!

Today is Saturday, but it always kind of feels like Saturday around here in the Morales house now that we've been in quarantine for 41 days! Anyway, earlier this week we had almost a whole day that our power was out. As Jason and I swapped out who could use the internet hotspot to work, I took the kids up to the studio to play and I turned on the mic for a quick little interview fun. Crazy enough, my recording gear is all battery powered - lucky you!

I know this is silly, but one of the sweetest things about being in quarantine as a family is watching the friendship between my two toddlers grow. Brighten is 3.5 years old and Grady is 16 months old. I saw a friend post a photo of her kids recently that said, "They became friends when they were all they had." I think that is so true for my kids as well. So, silly as it may be, I love that I am able to capture these sweet moments as a little snapshot of this time together.

Episode 2 — Kelly & Josie's Story :: Life with a new baby, self-employment, and four kids

In our second episode of Stories from Quarantine, Jason and I are joined by our friends, Kelly and Josie Gibbons. Kelly and Josie live in Hattiesburg, MS with their four kids, the youngest of which was born right at the beginning of the quarantine! Kelly and Josie share their experience about what that was like and how life in quarantine with a newborn has been extremely unique.

Like Jason and me, Kelly and Josie are also both self-employed, so we talk about what it's like to plan ahead when we don't know what finances are going to look like from one month to the next, or one quarter to the next, how our businesses hav been effected by Covid-19, and what budgeting strategies have served us well in this time of unknowns.

I’m so thankful for Kelly and Josie sharing their story with us! We had a great time catching up with them an learning from them, and I hope you enjoy hearing from them as much as we did!

Check out the show notes on my website with fun pictures and links!

Episode 1 — Julia & Ian’s Story :: Life in Ministry of a Large, Multi-Campus Church

In our first episode of Stories from Quarantine, Jason and I are joined by my sister, Julia, and her husband, Ian. Julia and Ian are both on staff at a large, multi-campus church. They were at different campuses, but the essentially have the same job — just for different age groups. Ian works with the high school ministry and Julia works with the preschool ministry.

They both work hard with their volunteers on a daily basis to prepare for Sundays, but when all of a Sunday, Sunday morning church looks completely different, they’ve had to adapt in ways they could have never imagined.

I’m so thankful for Julia and Ian and them sharing their heart for ministry during this time. They are truly a light in their community, and I know everyone they serve is blessed by them.

Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by Laura Hoffman!

Laura is my first guest who I've never actually met in person. Laura is an adoptive mom and we met in a Facebook group for parents who either were adopting or did adopt from Ethiopia. She and her husband, Tim, live in Colorado with their children, and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to chat with Laura and hear her incredibly heart-wrenching and also beautiful story. I kept thinking of the verse in Genesis when Joseph says, "You planned evil against me; God planned it for good to bring about the present result--the survival of many people." (Genesis 50:20 CSB)

Laura and Tim are the founder of Brighton Their World and Brighton Academy in Ethiopia. Their ministry is absolutely amazing and I cannot wait for you to hear more about it in this episode. I've linked to all of the ways that you can get involved at the bottom of the show notes, so be sure to check out their Facebook page and information if you'd like to become a sponsor or a prayer partner.

Last, this is the last episode of the first season of Stories from South Place! Beginning next week, Jason and I will be releasing a series called, Stories from Quarantine! We'll be interviewing people who are a part of different segments that are up a community and find out how they're effected by the COVID-19 quarantine that we're currently under. These mini-episodes will be shorter, about 15-20 minutes, and will be releasing twice per week! If you already subscribe to Stories from South Place, this series will come straight to wherever you listen to podcasts!

S1 E07 :: Rachel's Story

S1 E07 :: Rachel's Story

Check out the show notes on my website with fun pictures and links!

Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by my neighbor and friend, Rachel Sims!

Rachel and I met a few years ago when our oldest children were in the same Parents Day Out class! She and her husband, Eric, and two boys, Holcomb and Elliot, live behind us and it's been so fun to raise kids the same ages literally in each other's backyards! On this episode, Rachel and I talk about how fun it is to be neighbors, what we love about our neighborhood, her journey of becoming a doula, and we finish the episode by talking about our absolute most favorite Birmingham consignment sale, Kids Market & Mom!

I do want to be sensitive to anyone who's listening and let you know up front that Rachel and I talk a lot about her business, Dearly Doula, which means we talk quite a bit about pregnancy and birth. I know from experience that there are seasons for me that it was really hard to listen to people talk about pregnancy, and so I want to be upfront that we talk about that topic quite a bit in this episode. If that's a hard conversation for you, I have been there and totally understand! However, we do talk about the different struggles that women walk through, and I hope that if it's difficult subject for you, you'll find some encouragement through knowing you're not alone.

Last, we only have ONE episode left of the first season of Stories from South Place! After next week, Jason and I will be releasing a mini-series called, Stories from Quarantine! We'll be interviewing people who are a part of different segments that are up a community and find out how they're effected by the COVID-19 quarantine that we're currently under. Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by one of my lifelong best friends, Chastity Adams!

Chastity and I have known each other for almost 15 years! She and her husband, Chad, and daughters, Reese (almost 16) and Maggie (almost 14), live in Northern California on the campus of J.H. Ranch, where they moved almost exactly one year ago. Chastity shares the story of their move, answer God's calling to BIG things, and how they've settled in. She also shares some super tangible advice about parenting, living in the moment and being thankful for the season God has you in. She is an encouragement and inspiration to everyone she meets and I know you'll enjoy hearing her story!

I would love to hear your feedback! Say hi through a DM or email!

S1 E05 :: Ray & Tricia's Story :: The Trial

S1 E05 :: Ray & Tricia's Story :: The Trial

Check on the show notes on my website!

Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by my  parents, Ray and Tricia Sansom, for the second part of their story. If you missed the first part, be sure to check it out here: S1 E04 :: Ray & Tricia's Story :: The Early Years

In part two of this episode, we'll zero in on about a three year period of time from 2008-2011. Be sure to listen to the whole story because it gives a lot of important context and details, but the short story is that when my dad was serving as the Speaker of the House of Representatives in Florida, he was indicted, and ultimately his case went to trial in March of 2011. During that time, his character was called in to question in over 2,000 news articles, he had to step down from both his job as Speaker and his job as a representative, and it was a very publicly excruciating season for our family.

Spoiler alert: NINE YEARS AGO TODAY, his case was dropped after a week of the prosecutor presenting his case (there wasn't any evidence that the prosecutor could show to substantiate the charges, since my dad didn't do anything wrong). My mom, dad, and I share what our experience was like on that day, and what healing has looked like over the last (almost) decade. There are so many nuggets of wisdom about forgiveness and faith in the midst of a literal trial that my parents offer, and I am certainly better for being part of this conversation. I hope you'll feel the same.

S1 E04 :: Ray & Tricia's Story :: The Early Years

Check on the show notes on my website!

Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by my amazing parents, Ray and Tricia Sansom. A few weeks ago the kids and I headed to "Honey and Poppy's House" for a quick weekend stay. I was so thankful to have an afternoon that we could record their story while the kids were napping! In part one of this episode (we recorded for over two hours, so I trimmed some and split it into two parts), Ray and Tricia share their story in what has become sort of the norm for this podcast -- it's the bird's eye view, if you will. They share about their lives growing up and raising a family in the beautiful area of Northwest Florida (that's the Destin/Fort Walton Beach area), as well as how they met (spoiler alert: it's super cute), fell in love, got married, and raised my sisters and me. They share about mom realizing her calling was to become a stay-at-home mom, and some of the challenges they faced with that, as well as my dad's calling to run for public office. They also discuss some stories from when my dad was elected to be a County Commissioner in Okaloosa County. They'll even end this part of the episode with a bit of a cliffhanger, because they're excellent storytellers :)

In part two of this episode, we'll zero in on about a three year period of time from 2008-2011. This period of time was an extremely hard season for my family, but especially my parents. That season was also very public, so if you're from Florida, you may be familiar with the story, but I'm so thankful for the opportunity to give my parents a platform to share their side of the story. Be sure to subscribe to this podcast so that part two comes directly to your podcast app tomorrow!

S1 E03 :: Logan's Story

S1 E03 :: Logan's Story

Welcome back to Stories from South Place! Today I'm joined by Logan Gibbons. Logan is one of my favorite friends and we've known each other for going on 10 years, although she and her husband, Codie, go back even farther with Jason. We head upstairs to the studio at South Place to chat about her story. In the last few years, Logan's family has grown in the most unique way. We discuss adding children to our homes, parenting, growing up, starting businesses, and so much more! Logan has so many little nuggets of wisdom to share, and one of my favorite parts of our conversation was talking about her business and how we each view creativity. It's such a fun conversation, and as I mention in the intro, you'll have to come back to hear more from her in our next season!

I would love to hear your feedback! Be sure to reach out with your questions, any comments, or just to say hi through a DM or email!

Since this is a BRAND NEW podcast, I would LOVE for you to give us a rating in iTunes to help people find the podcast! S1 E02 :: Sarah's Story

S1 E02 :: Sarah's Story

Welcome to Stories from South Place and our first official episode with an (outside of my family) guest! Today I'm joined by one of my very favorite friends, Sarah Temple. We head upstairs to the studio at South Place to chat about her story as a foster mom over the last 8 years! Sarah has so much wisdom to share about loving kids and families and meeting people where they are. It was such a joy to carve out some time to talk together, and we joked that this isn't too far from our usual routine of just sitting on the couch downstairs talking about these same things!

I asked Sarah if she had any needs as a foster mom currently, and she sent me her foster care Amazon Wish List. If you would like to support her in her foster care journey, head over to the wish list and send some diapers, bottles, or sippy cups her way! She also expressed that Amazon gifts cards are ALWAYS welcome -- either for her or other foster families you may know!

After we recorded this podcast, I was listening to another podcast that I love and heard this incredible story of a mom who shares her story of having her children removed from her home by social services. If you feel like your eyes were opened to kind of the "other side" of foster care by listening to Sarah, as I was, I think you'll really love listening to Vanessa's Story on Around the World with the Archibald Project. I felt like this was almost part two to the conversation that I had with Sarah, so I hope you'll check it out! Please note that Vanessa's story contains references to some abuse, so be sure to use discretion when listening.

I would love to hear your feedback! Be sure to reach out with your questions, any comments, or just to say hi through a DM or email!

S1 E01 :: Our Story

S1 E01 :: Our Story

This is our first official episode of Stories from South Place! Welcome, friends!

In this episode, my husband, Jason, and I share our story. We start at the beginning of how we met, how we built our family, and bring you right up to the present. We hope that this episode will serve as a kind of prelude to season one, as you hear me reference parts of our story throughout this season, and likely seasons to come. We hope that you enjoy hearing our story, what the Lord has done in our lives, and most of all, we hope it's encouraging to you.

This is the first episode of the first season, so we'll be releasing a new episode each week! Thank you for being a listener from the start. I truly cannot communicate how much that means to me!

I would love to hear your feedback! Be sure to reach out with your questions, any comments, or just to say hi through a DM or email!
