Why should creating marine protected areas and protecting coast be our our focus?

Welcome to Understanding Underwater podcast, this is Kaan from Turkiye.
Today, we're going to explore why it's crucial to protect our oceans and coastlines. We must establish marine protected areas to preserve the seas and shores struggling with the damages caused by human activities. However, the question remains: when, where, and most importantly, how?
Marine protected areas enable the restoration of natural stocks of fish and other marine products. Promoting these areas alongside sustainable fishing practices helps local fishermen continuously benefit from marine resources and ensures coastal residents and indigenous people safely reap these benefits.
But this is just the beginning! Keep listening as i uncover what i can do together to safeguard the future of our oceans.

How will submersible cages transform and change the future of aquaculture and food from sea?

How will submersible cages transform and change the future of aquaculture and food from sea?

The State of Fisheries and Aquaculture in the World report by the UN FAO highlights the significant growth of aquaculture as a tool to alleviate pressure on declining fish populations. The use of advanced technology, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and automation, in offshore fish farms offers promising solutions to address various challenges faced by traditional coastal aquaculture. Standard marine cages used in fish farming have drawbacks like escapes, disease, and adverse environmental conditions. However, submersible cages positioned at different depths within the water column can mitigate these issues by taking advantage of stable temperatures, reduced storm impact, and lower parasite contamination in deeper waters. The development of submersible cages has shown positive results for several fish species, and offshore fish farms are being considered as a sustainable and environmentally sensitive approach. Companies like Forever Oceans are utilizing AI-driven management software, sensors, and cameras to optimize fish farming operations and minimize human intervention. Offshore aquaculture has the potential to provide a more natural environment for fish, reduce energy consumption, and utilize natural resources efficiently. While deep-sea fish farming is still in its growth stage, ongoing research and collaboration among stakeholders are crucial to further develop submersible cage aquaculture and address the specific challenges associated with different fish species.

Benefits of using artificial intelligence at aquaculture and how AI will change the future of aquaculture?

Benefits of using artificial intelligence at aquaculture and how AI will change the future of aquaculture?

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an important technology in many industries, including aquaculture. AI can help aquaculture operations improve their production efficiency, reduce losses, and enhance the overall well-being of the facility. In aquaculture, AI can be used for monitoring water quality and chemistry, integrating feeding with monitoring technologies, early warning systems to detect algae blooms, and positioning cages within the water column during storms. AI can also be used in closed circuit aquaculture facilities to prevent epidemics caused by viruses and pathogens.

One of the key benefits of using AI in aquaculture is its ability to process and organize large amounts of raw data. This can help managers make informed decisions and take appropriate actions quickly, ultimately saving time and increasing productivity. For example, Farm 4.0 is a project developed in the European Union that uses sensors, robotic technologies, and AI to optimize feed and monitor water quality instantly.

Overall, AI is becoming an indispensable component of an orderly and efficient aquaculture facility. While gaining expertise in fisheries and fish farming is essential to working in this field, there are master's and doctoral programs available that provide a comprehensive approach to combining AI with aquaculture. Additionally, online courses and boot camps can provide basic and career-advancing skills in this field.

The Relationship Between Seafood and Heavy Metals - Audiobook

The Relationship Between Seafood and Heavy Metals - Audiobook

Although heavy metals, which are an integral component of the earth's crust, have existed in the world for hundreds of years in a unique cycle mechanism, their geochemical cycles and biochemical balances have changed drastically due to human activities increasing day by day. The ever-increasing industrial activities of the last century have also resulted in an increase in people's direct or indirect exposure to heavy metals. Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium and Arsenic are in the top five of the most common heavy metals that cause human poisoning. The sources that provide heavy metals are actually not as far away as we think, we are closer to some of them than we think; welding shops, paints, pesticides, fuels...

When the members of this metal group enter the human body and begin to show negative effects there, they are defined as toxic and their name begins to turn into toxic metals.

Pollution of water, air and soil with heavy/toxic metals is an environmental problem and hundreds of millions of people around the world are affected every day. Somehow, these metals, which are unexpectedly mixed with any part of nature, leach from industrial plants and acid rain, causing environmental pollution.

There is no way to permanently get rid of these metals, which we define as toxic in our heavy bodies in nature, but if we can review and improve their mixing mechanisms in nature, we can minimize the impact they have on us and maybe even eliminate them completely. For this, people from all parts of the society should make a joint effort and legislators should put human life in the forefront and make laws in accordance with the recommendations made on the basis of the findings obtained in the light of scientific data.

Getting to know heavy metals better is the starting point for regulating our relationship with these substances. This is the benchmark in the emergence of a small document containing clear information on metals that are alternately identified as heavy and toxic.

The Relationship Between Seafood and Heavy Metals document, which focuses on heavy metals that are most common in nature, is presented as an easy content to anyone who wants to better understand toxic metals and learn how to avoid them.
