The Positive Episode with Guest Steven Van Elk (Warning, contains very limited photography chat)
The Positive Episode!!
Episode 61: In this episode we are joined by our good friend from across the pond, Steven Van Elk to get a more upbeat perspective on the current state of events!
We are fed up with all the negativity surrounding the wedding industry right now, so with the vaccine roll out going well both here in the UK and in the US things are finally looking up!
We’re all coming into wedding season and although bookings are a little down from normal for everyone, it is safe to say we are all buzzing to get back behind the lens and infront of a wedding ceremony again!
Obviously it wouldn’t be an episode from one half of the Wedding Photo Hangover without some booze so we chat whiskies, our favourite films and also field some questions from the Facebook group.
Enjoy!§

We also catch up with how Scott is getting on dealing with all the new lockdown restrictions and the fact that weddings are currently illegal in England. James has a cancellation to deal with but Ross has had a few new bookings in the last week or two.

Planning for the future and The Business of Photography Mentorship
Episode 59: It’s 2021 and although the year hasn’t exactly started as we would all have liked, James and Ross are keen to look to the future when hopefully things are a bit more “back to normal” Both James and Ross have been dealing with new enquires for 2021/22 and they discuss how to fit new bookings in with the rearranged bookings from 2020/21.
Should you lower your prices to accolade a smaller/shorter wedding day and how do you try to upsell future products to clients during a recession.
James has also finalised his plans for the Business of Photography course that he is running. Check out the website here: https://www.jkbop.com
Stand by for an avalanche of information covering everything from booking your first portrait shoo to managing booking 20+ weddings a year! He is delighted to share all this information with you all and is proud of what has been put together so far!
With more ideas flowing about the BOP and some new (very special guests) lined up, don’t forget to join our Facebook group for chat and questions

We’re back!
Episode 58: After a long gap in recordings, James and Ross have some huge news both personally and professionally! Ross got engaged last weekend and is now on the hunt for a wedding photographer...
James has started the new mentoring side to his business and has just completed the first block of coaching. We discuss where James wants to take this new line of enquiry and what the plans are going forward! The new mentoring also managed to fortuitously lead James towards a beautiful Aurora Borealis whilst shooting a wedding with one of his clients from the course!
You literally couldn’t make up what happened and is one of the most phenomenal coincidences and subsequent shoots ever!! A proper blend of landscape and wedding photography!
We also answers some questions from our Facebook group, it has been so good to get back interacting with everyone again!

The Soul of the Photograph with David duChemin
Episode 56: James is join by photographer and writer David duChemin to chat about the heart and soul of photography.
There is more to photography than just the technology and gear. Very rarely do we all discuss the journey and the soul of the photograph. Strip away all the gear and technical aspect of taking a photograph and what are you left with? We dive in to this and more, including imposter syndrome and why do we have to label ourselves?
Do you want to transcend you’re photography to a new level? Discover the soul and reasoning behind your photography and click the links below to discover David and I HIGHLY recommend his books.

It's all a bit sh*t & post COVID plans!
Episode 55: James and Ross are back after almost a month off recording to discuss how things have been and more importantly what is the plan going forward post-lockdown.
There is no hiding from it, lockdown has been pretty rubbish but we try to keep it upbeat and focus on next years wedding season, dealing with the mounting workload coming up next season and how to structure pricing for “doorstep shoots”.
We also have very exciting plans (still just plans at the minute) to take a trip somewhere together!! This is not meant as click-bait but it is worth listening in til the end for!!
We have the winner of our macro competition to announce next time round too!!

Episode 53: James and Ross are joined once again by previous guest Alistair Hamill.
We try to stick to the script but after being in lockdown for 6weeks the script goes out the window pretty quickly....
We discuss coping with Covid19 restrictions, applying for financial help and how you could make money post-lockdown. Alistair has started his podcast so we question why on earth he would do such a crazy thing!! We compare microphones, shutter sounds and where will be the first place to go to shoot once lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

EP 50 - Jim Pollard on weddings with helicopters, creating your style and how home printing changes everything
Episode 50: Woohoo! We hit our first milestone, 50 episodes and boy is episode 50 epic! Ross & James chat with Jim Pollard, one half of the super talented husband and wife team “Pollard We Are”.
Originally from the UK but after traveling the world Jim and his family settled in the beautiful New Zealand where he discovered his love for wedding photography. Although Jim and his wife Vicky are hugely successful destination wedding photographers, they are most well known around the world for jumping in helicopters and flying to the tops of mountains in NZ to create master pieces of art during a wedding day! We discuss how he does this and the hurdles he faces to capture these incredible photographs.
We also chat about the equipment they use when undertaking such a huge amount of travelling during a wedding day, his Instagram followers, Jim’s thoughts on wedding albums, his printing with his Canon Pro-222 and how he prefers to offer a single shot beautifully printed than an album. We also managed to squeeze in a quick discussion on editing and how he became associated with Dvlop preset

Episode 40: It’s another full on episode. James had a (BIG) impulse buy. Ross gets stranded in France again and we answer the following questions from our Facebook group
- What where the biggest mistakes you made when starting out in wedding photography.
- When you are editing weddings, what are the main themes that come up that you need to adjust? Are you brightening faces? Getting rid of sh*t in the background? Etc
- Where are you getting most of your business? Most of mine are through wedding fairs
- I know you stay late, how do you deal with the drunken idiots at that time
- Would you like the Facebook group to be more active?
- Bright windows during ceremony and speeches, Vogs prefer a darker constant background as we don’t do lights (well, we shouldn’t be, takes the discreet element away) photographers can light subject with a flash.
I always ask the couple but, What’s your thoughts?

Can you make a living with landscape photography?
Welcome to The Photographers Craic. Episode 28. Can you make a living with landscape photography?.
In this episode we catch up with James and Ross. We then get stuck in to discussing if you can make a living with landscape photography and we touch the tip of the iceberg on how this is possible. This episode is a little special as Ross has joined James in person. This does mean they are sharing a mic and the audio is a little off but don’t let that spoil the episode.

How do price your wedding photography
Welcome to episode 25. That topic that is not often discussed, how to price your wedding photography.
Pricing! It’s a very controversial topic and I feel this episode may be the first of many we discuss on the topic. We have no issues talking about how much we charge for wedding photography and we break the price down so it might help you price your photography. Many wedding photographers feel that the “value” of photography is dropping in the UK but are we thinking as business people or artists? If you are part time photographer, does that mean you should be charging less. Should there be an industry standard price?
Don’t undervalue yourself or the industry. Work out the basic price and then add what you feel you deserve for all the hard work and risk.

The business of wedding photography with Adam Mason
Episode 20! I can’t believe that we have reached 20 episodes. This episode we chat with Washington DC photographer Adam Mason. Adam also hosts the Bearded Tog podcast where he discusses everything from pricing, social media, marketing and so much more. We get to know more about Adam but also talk about his mentoring, advising other photographers in the world of photography and we touch base on his plans for US wedding domination as he starts his associate photography program.
We also cover a couple of questions from our Facebook group:
- Typically, wedding photographers are minimalists during the day. Do you still have most of your gear with you, but just in your car? Aside from Body & Lenses, what have you found to be must carries.
- When do you set up any extra gear such as flashes? What occasions to you need ‘extra gear’ for?
- How often do you upgrade gear? Only as needed as soon as a newer model comes out?

Wedding "Special" with Steven Van Elk & Dustin McKibben of the Wedding Photo Hangover
Welcome to episode 19 - Wedding photography special. Ross and I teamed up with Steven & Dustin from the Wedding photo hangover podcast. There is a BIG WARNING with this episode. There is a little bit swearing, alcohol and just all round silliness.
We talk with them about wedding photography, sports photography, and landscape photography in this episode.
Q&A:
Is it okay to shark a client out from underneath another photographer?
Have you ever forgotten the names of the bride and groom?
How can you fix the sun's reflection in the water so it doesn't look wavy?
How do you find a cool location for a selfie with sun and light and water and mountain?
I wake with the rooster to do sunset shots but the sun is not setting. I wake with the owl to do sunrise shots but the sun is not rising. What am I? (I'm sorry I had to include this to relieve myself of the burden of being the only person to see this awful thing).
