Every Writer Starts From Zero
We all start from Zero. There is no writer that starts knowing everything about the field they starting in and that's okay.
Start where you are and don't wait till you have enough "knowledge, resources, and money.
Everyone grows into who they are supposed to be.
So be patient and take it a step at a time, a day at a time and so on.
Use what you have no matter how little it is.
Don't let anything stop you from pursuing your goal of being an author.

Does An Author Need Validation?
Do we need to hear people tell us how good we are to be successful as authors?
There definitely needs to be a balance when it comes to validation. Yes we do need validation but that can't be our focus and something we need to look for as authors.
We need to be able to motivate ourselves and to be able to do things even when no one is behind us.
Writing can be a lonely job at times so we need to learn to change the locus of control from being external to internal.

How To Win At Being An Author
Today I am celebrating the 50th episode on this podcast and what a journey it's being to this point. There have been highs and there have been lows but I am still here.
In this episode I talk about one of the main things that have kept me going as an author and that is to not give up.
If you are going to succeed at anything in life don't give up no matter how hard it is.
And especially as an author, you are going to face some really tough challenges that might convince to give it up but you need to keep at it. You are building something amazing as an author and there will be opposition but don't give up.
I would like to thank all my listeners for taking the time to listen to what I have to say. I really appreciate it.
If you were encouraged by the talk today let me know here or on my Facebook page. I would love to hear from you.

Who Is Telling You What Your Potential Is As An Author?
It's so important to surround yourself with the right people as you pursue your goals and dreams.
And the sad reality is that there are always people who don't see or don't want to see the potential you have.
And because we are unsure of ourselves we let anyone tell us what we can and can do.
You need to back yourself and believe in yourself. Make sure you have people in your life that are pushing you to accomplish all that you want to do and who challenge you.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the episode so make sure to comment. You can do so here or on my Facebook page.

Believe In Yourself As An Author
As an author you need to learn to back yourself up. You need to be your own greatest fan because there are not too many of those around.
If you don't believe in what you are creating then that is when you are more prone to the negative feedback you will receive.
And you need to be able to critic yourself in a healthy way because there is a right and wrong way to do. One can leave you deflated and one can propel you to achieve more.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic so be sure to comment here or on my Facebook page.

Unlearning and Relearning Habits to Succeed As An Author.
Another key to success as an author is having the ability to change.
There are habits, mindsets and attitudes we have learned that are hindering us from advancing in our craft which we need to let go.
But there is a problem, its not easy.
As people we love comfort, we seek it.
Hence the need and importance of letting go outdated mindsets, negative attitudes and habits.
You need courage to unlearn and learn new things. It's all about intentionality on your part.
It's also about transparency and it's about being humble and admitting you need help.
You need the right people around you.

Overcoming Impatience to Publish Your Best Work.
One of the trademarks of a great author is patience. We all need to learn to be patient especially as authors and writers because the truth of the matter is that not everything is in our control. There are aspects of writing that are in our control and somethings that are not in our control.
What's important is what we do with the things we can't control.
Impatience can rob us of creating the best product for the people we are targeting.
We can even compromise on the quality and overlook mistakes all in the name of "getting the book" out but as an author we need patience to endure the process of publishing.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic. Do you struggle with impatience?

What Do You Believe About Your Success As An Author?
What do you believe about your success as a self published author? Even if you are starting the journey what do you believe your chances are as a writer? Your answer is going to determine the success you want to achieve or will play an instrumental part in your failure. Who are you allowing to tell you what your potential is? All these things play a big part in you achieving the goals you have set your self.
Expectation is a huge thing so if you allow people to set your expectation levels then you are in trouble. Set your own expectations but to that you need to make sure you are dreaming big and setting big goals. You also need to get rid of negative mindsets that have creeped in as you have allowed just anyone to tell you what is and what is not possible for you.
If you enjoyed this episode I would love to hear your thoughts on it and please share it. Also give this episode and podcast a five-star rating if you are enjoying it.

How To Make An Impact As An Author.
As an author you have something to say. You have the answer to a problem that someone out there is facing.
So it's important as a writer and author to understand that you can make a difference in the life of others with your writing.
But at times distractions can come and general life happens that gets you to take your focus off writing and publishing your book or books.
The truth is that we have no time to waste.
We can make an impact in people's lives but there are things we need to change in our thinking and our everyday routines.
Priorities need to be analyzed and changed to accommodate the impact we want to make.

There are so many options to market your book. You don't have to restrict yourself to one market especially as an Indie author.

Lean On Your Uniqueness As An Author
One of the hardest things for authors is deciding what they going to write.
There is so much information out there on the best things to write that we can forget that what
works for someone may not work for you.
As a self-published author you have the room to write what you want. You don't have to fall into the mindset of trying to
write what everyone is telling you to write.
You are unique and the experiences and knowledge you have are what you need to lean towards.
Yes there is a balance to have as you start out. You might have to write to market until you get to know what your passions and
desires are, those things that make you jump out of bed and energize you.
You may have only grown up only reading fiction and that's all you want to write now and that's okay.
Don't hide that. Lean towards it. Don't despise your uniqueness for anything.

The Freedom We Have As Indie Authors.
As Indie Author's we need to throw out the rule book. There are no limits to abide by as an Indie author.
We can write what we want and we can write when we want and we dictate the pace we want to move at.
There are no set guidelines to follow as an Indie author.
We have all the freedom.
It does mean that you will have to work extra hard to learn what you need to learn but that's okay.

And the good news is that if you don't have a strong work ethic it can be built and if your work ethic

What is work ethic anyway?
It is a set of values based on the ideas of discipline and hard work.
When I was employed I thought I had a strong work ethic but when I started working for myself I realized
my work ethic was weak. So I had a lot of work to do to build it up and it's still a work in progress.

Last week I spoke about the challenges of writing to market but today I want to talk about the
challenges you will face when writing what you are passionate about.
It is possible to write what you love off the bat and start making money from that.
But for the most part there is a learning phase that needs to happen.
There are skills you need to acquire and that takes time so what do you do in the meantime?

Think Long-Term With Your Writing
Being an author is a marathon, not a sprint.
So you write or pursue your goal of being an author it's important to have a long-term mindset.
There is so much to learn and so much growth to happen.
But you will find it really difficult to grow if you don't understand that those things take time.
Are you prepared to commit at least 5 to 10 years to being an author, to accomplishing your goals
as an author?
My mentors have been in the game for at least fifteen years. They have been steadfast and have reaped the
benefits of being consistent and I want that too.
I have made a decision to be in this for the long-haul and I know it's not going to be easy but this is what I want.

Redefining What An Author Is Today
There is much more to being an author than writing.
Once you publish your first book you have essentially started your business.
So it's important to look at your writing as a business.
The sooner you can adopt a business mindset the better you will be as you
proceed.
This is especially true for Indie authors.
You are an entrepreneur and there are a lot of things to learn.
You are not only a writer, but you are a marketer, accountant, and so much more.
Even in the traditional writing space, authors have to take on more if they want
their books to succeed.
Like any business it will take commitment, an insatiable appetite for learning, patience, and a never say die attitude to
succeed.

How To Overcome Imposter Syndrome To Achieve Success

The Power Of An Idea In A Writer's Life.
We all have ideas about the type of writer's we want to be, the type of success we want to
achieve, the impact we want to make with our books and so much more. But who has given
you the ideas you are currently holding up for yourself? Are they positive or predominantly negative.
As a writer you need to get into the habit of giving yourself positive, healthy ideas about everything
concerning your writing career.
It's time to take stock of the ideas you are holding up for yourself. If it's not challenging you, motivating you to
achieve success, inspiring you, and growing you then it's time to let them go.
And it's also time to look at where you are getting those ideas you are holding up.

A Writer's Worst Enemy.
One of the main reasons people fail at anything hasn't got anything to do with what's
happening outside of them. It has to do with what is happening inside them.
Their thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs.
In this episode I talk about the importance of working on yourself.
In fact the actual process of writing a book will reveal character traits, beliefs and trains of
thought that you didn't even know you had.
And instead of ignoring those things, take note.
Be in the moment and ask yourself questions like, "why I am thinking like this" or "why do I want to quit?"
As you work on yourself you become resilient, tenacious and a whole lot of other things that will benefit
you as you grow as a writer.

But in this episode I look at three reasons why you should consider writing a book.
At the core of the matter, you have a story to tell. The experiences you have
gone through, the lessons you have learned till now all contribute to the story
you have in you.
There are people who need to hear your story.
You have the answer that someone is looking for, the answer to the breakthrough they need.
Don't listen to the voices of fear or be intimidated.
Yes, writing a book is hard but it's so worth it in the end. It's worth the struggle.
So what are you waiting for?
Start writing that book!

A Writer's Greatest Asset
Relationships.
Where would we be without them?
As I reflect on my writing journey, I see the instrumental role they have played.
You have an amazing resource in the people that are in your lives but do you know that?
As an aspiring author or author you need other people.
Don't take for granted the people that come your way.
Treat the relationships you have as gold.
I love the quote from Hellen Keller that says,
"Alone we can do so little:
Together we can do so much."
What are your thoughts on the vital role relationships play in the life of an author?

Writing Is Hard, But Don't Give Up
Writing a book is one of the hardest thing you can do.
There is a mindset out there that thinks writing a book is easy.
And I guess it is if you don't put in the work to make it great.
But if there is a message you want to get out there and you have a passion to write
then writing that book is not going to be easy.
There are going to be obstacles and challenges that will make you think about quitting and giving up.
But as an author, giving up should not be an option.
You should have a "never say die" mindset.
Even though it's going to be hard you must persevere until you get the job done.
What are your thoughts on the topic?
How do you deal with the difficulty that comes with writing a book?
I would love to hear your thoughts.

Stay In Your Lane.
There is a saying that goes along the lines of,
"Don't compare your chapter one to someone else's chapter twenty"
As a writer it's so important to learn to stay in your own lane. Comparison can only lead
to discouragement, impatience, overwhelm and so many other things.
When I made a decision to finish my first book I made the mistake of comparing myself to other
more seasoned writers. I was nowhere close to where they were and I was freaking out.
I tried to implement some of their advanced strategies and failed dismally.
It's taken some time to realize that I need to stay in my own lane.
To become a successful author you need to do the work.
The work of learning and making mistakes.
It's okay to learn from others but don't fall into the trap of trying to be them.
Your writing journey is unique to you.
Stay in your lane and accomplish the goals you want to accomplish.
Be okay with where you are. Becoming a success doesn't happen overnight.
It takes time.
So keep ploughing ahead friend.

Silencing The Fear To Be A Successful Author.
Fear is something we all have to deal with on a regular basis and this couldn't be more
true for authors. Fear is something we have to constantly navigate and how we respond
and deal with the fear we face can determine our success.
There are so many opportunities waiting for us on the other side of fear but when we listen
to fear and fail to silence it's voice we can remain stagnant, unproductive and frustrated.
Fear can stop you from writing the book you are meant to write. (It nearly stopped me)
And make sure you are not fighting fear alone.
Talk to someone or people you trust about the fears you face.
Accountability is a big factor in overcoming fear.
You can do this.
So stop listening to fear and write the books you are meant to write.
Stop listening to fear to succeed as an author.
What fears are you dealing with that are stopping you from being a successful author?
Or on the other side of the coin,
How do you deal with fear as an author?
I would love to know.

A Key Book Marketing Ingredient
"There are hundreds of different ways or channels to market a product or grow a company.
The secret of success is not to do all of them, or even as many as possible.
Instead, it's to find the one or two channels that work for your company and focus all your
energy and resources on just those."
- Traction: How Any Startup Can Achieve Explosive Customer Growth
As an author or aspiring author you will need to learn to cut through the noise.
The way to succeed is by focusing on one or two things instead of trying a hundred
at a time.
When I started, I tried everything and listened to everything which didn't help me much.
The only thing that managed to accomplish was to make me more frustrated and confused
because I didn't know where to start.
It felt all so overwhelming.
But learning to zone-in on one or two things is the key.
It really works.

Where You Start Is Not Where You End.
"Where you start is not where you end" is not just a nice thing to say but is a life principle.
Your ending as an author is going to be very different to your start.
And understanding this very important principle is so key because a lot of the time, we
tend to judge our journey based on the start. But we don't know much in the beginning
so just because we have no followers in the beginning doesn't mean we suck as writers.
There is so much to learn as you start and it's okay to be okay with where you are.
It's going to be very important to not make any rash conclusions about the type of author
and success you are going to make based on your beginning because remember,
Where you start is not where you will end.
There are a lot of successes lined up for you. Lots of lessons to be learned, and huge growth to happen.
So pace yourself. Don't put unnecessary pressure on yourself.
Your author journey is going to be very different next year than it is right now and that's exciting
unless of course, you become lazy, procrastinate, don't take your writing seriously and just sit around doing nothing.
So it's time to change your mind and the way you see where you are now.
Where you start is not where you end.

Be Patient On Your Writing Journey.
When I started writing my first book I set a few goals and among those goals was when I wanted to
finish but I never hit that target. The Covid-19 pandemic had only just started so I faced a lot of
challenges as I tried to navigate this new project I had started and the pandemic. It was frustrating
when things didn't go according to plan. But over time, I have been learning to be patient with myself.
As an author you need to be patient with yourself because anything can happen and the goals you have set
can change in an instance because of unforeseen circumstances.
The goal is to keep moving forward and not being hard on yourself when things don't work out.
Even though I missed my deadline by a few months, I felt a sense of pride and accomplishment when I
did eventually publish my book.
Writing a book is a journey and the journey is filled with highs and lows and you need to learn how to deal
with that. Don't put unnecessary pressure on your self when life happens.
Patience is a critical skill you need to have as an author.
I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic.

Starting From Zero
"Every great thing that ever started,
started with somebody not knowing.
There was a day when Oprah didn't know
how to turn on a microphone."
- Unknown
We all have to start somewhere and as writers and authors, starting can seem so overwhelming.
There is so much learning to be done, so many things we have to know and all that can seem
insurmountable.
And before we know it, we quit before we even begin.
And even if we have started, the progress we make may not be what we wanted.
It's slow and can feel like a snail crawling a hundred meter track.
It seems impossible.
But we have to understand that everyone starts from zero.
There was a time, a best -selling author didn't know anything about marketing, editing, formatting, etc.
There was a time they struggled to sell one book.
But over time, they learned the skills that needed to be learned.
Was it hard? Most definitely, but they never quit. They kept at it, making progress, learning and growing.
No matter how daunting the task ahead of you may appear, don't give up. Keep at it.
We all start from zero.

Stop Talking Yourself Out Of Being An Author.
In the early stages of my writing journey, I talked myself out of writing regularly.
I didn't believe I could do it especially since I did not have any academic qualifications
as a writer. But that kind of talking really hurt my progress and kept me in a place of
self-doubt.
If you want to be an author, you need to silence the negative voices that are keeping
you from picking up the pen.
You can become an author and the time is now.
Stop listening to people that tell you that you can't become an author as well.
I believe you can do it if you push through the negativity.
What is your biggest hinderance to writing a book?
I would love to hear your thoughts on the topic and I would love to hear what is the biggest
thing that's holding you back.

Creating Habits to Increase Productivity As An Author.
As a new author I quickly realized the need to create new habits. The previous habits
I had were not serving me so I needed to change.
Learning a new habit is not easy but the payoff is so worth it. The goal after all is becoming
a better writer. Yes we want to sell more books but to sell more books we need to become
better at our craft.
There were a few points I expanded on which were,
- To make room for new habits there needs to be a letting go of other things
- The importance of accountability
- Learn to be flexible

Put Aside The Excuses And Write.
My writing journey is littered with excuses. Initially, they seemed legit but as I took a closer look at them,
I realized there was something deeper going on.
At the root, fear was the motivator.
- Fear of the unknown
- Fear of how people would respond to the book (would they like it, would anyone even read it?)
- Did I have anything noteworthy to share
But I only made progress when I put aside the excuses and got to work which led to me publishing my first book.
So what excuses are you making on your writing journey?
Excuses will stop you from making any kind of progress.
It's time to take a look under the hood and see what's really going on?
What is really going on behind the excuses?
Don't let excuses rob you of an amazing and exciting journey that is prepared for you.
Let's get going!

Cultivating A Positive Attitude Toward Learning, As An Author.
What is your attitude toward learning?
As an author or aspiring author you need to train yourself to love learning
because a whole lot of learning needs to happen if you want to grow and
become successful.
In this episode I talk about the negative
attitudes I have been harboring towards learning. I also talk about something
called, "Creative Avoidance" which is an indicator that one has a negative
attitude something.
If you are going to succeed as author you need to give up outdated, negative
attitudes about learning.
If you like this episode make sure to give it a review and please share it with

How To Write A Devotional.
In this interview I talk to Olga Matsanura about her first and new book - The New Move.
We talk about the importance of being patient in the process of writing.
"Take time to create the best book you can and don't rush and become impatient in the
creation process."
We also go through a few steps of how to write a devotional.
We then talk about the challenges faced as she wrote her book and how she overcame them.
This was a great interview which I enjoyed a lot.
I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did and most importantly, that you will leave having learned something

How To Rise Up Out Of The Ashes Of Disappointment And Failure.
In this episode, I talk to my good friend Austin who has published a book titled, "Out Of The Ashes".
A book for people who have failed in business and are struggling to rise up and try again.
His message is simple but powerful: You are not a failure even when you fail and you don't
have to let your failures define you.
Even though his book is targeted at entrepreneurs, I think his book is for anyone who has
failed at something and doesn't know how to move on from there.
As we came to the end of the interview we also talked about the future of African authors.
He had some inspiring words for African authors which I appreciated a lot.

Living In A To-Do List.
Whether you are starting out as an author or a veteran author, setting goals is important.
Without goals and a plan it's really hard to get anything done but this is easier to except if
you have been writing for a while because you already do it.
But as you are starting out, the whole process can seem overwhelming, leaving you in a place
of not knowing how to start or where to start. But you can adopt and learn the habit of setting goals
and creating a to-do list.
In this episode I talk about my goal-setting strategy and how I learned to create a do-list and how it is
benefiting me now. If I can do it, then you can.
And even if you have been writing for a while, I share some ideas on goal-setting
that could benefit you.
Please remember to share this episode and if you would like to connect and leave a comment, you can do so here
or on my Facebook Page, blog, or YouTube Channel.
I would love to hear what you thought on the subject and would also love to hear what your strategy is.
