What's Happening Season 2 Episode 3: FT: Elder Donna Augustine and Tracy Landry: National Day of Truth and Reconciliation
We are honoured to have had the opportunity to have this important conversation with Elder Donna Augustine from Elisipogtog and our Indigenous Education Coordinator, Tracy Landry. Donna and Tracy talk to us about the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on September 30th and what it means this year following the horrific recoveries of thousands of Indigenous children in unmarked graves on the properties of former Residential Schools. Donna talks to us about the history of this land, her family and the children who taken from their families to attend these schools. We encourage students and staff to wear Orange on September 30th, in recognition of Phyllis Webstad's experience and in recognition of Every Child Matters.

This is a very exciting episode of What's Happening! Bryan and Stephanie travelled to Dorchester Consolidated School to record using the school's very own production studio! We interviewed Principal Gordie Kline, Teacher Stuart Murray and students Chase Betts and Charlie Grantmeyer about just some of the exciting projects that are coming out of the production lab and we also explored the school's Aquaponics Lab which will eventually be producing fresh food for the Dorchester community! Aubrey is back! This time he is filling us in on the incredible Fill The Bus Food Drive! This is the 21st annual Fill The Bus in ASD-E and like everything this year, it's getting a COVID overhaul! This year, Fill The Bus is an Virtual Giving Campaign! Donations are being collected through School Cash Online and will go directly to our School Food Programs through our partners at The Food Depot Alimentaire. The students participate in a language assessment, literacy assessment and numeracy assessment so they are set up with the appropriate supports and resources to ensure they have a positive and welcoming transition into their new school. Caroline shares the number of newcomer students currently registered in our District, some facts about all the languages you can hear at ASD-E schools and some of the awesome activities schools do to allow students to share and experience each others' cultures and traditions!

Our Community Schools Team is a vital part of ASD-E; they serve as a link between our schools and their communities and provide connections to programs and opportunities that enhance student learning both in and out of the classroom! Community Schools has been part of our District since 2006 and has evolved exponentially during that time. During the recent shut down, the Team was part of orchestrating more than 40,000 lunches in 92 days for students who normally rely on school food programs.
