The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Episode 4

An episode of The Rewind Movie Podcast

By The Rewind Movie Podcast
Drawing on a decade-plus friendship whose roots stretch back to their film-obsessed student days, Gali and Devlin cast an eye backwards to the movies that kickstarted their love of film. In their Throwback series, each will take turns picking a title that they consider seminal to their youth, and watch again to determine whether they wasted their precious childhoods sitting in the dark with these VHS tapes, or if their movie touchstones still hold up today.

Lawnmower Man 2 : Beyond Cyberspace (1996) - Episode 21 BARGAIN BIN
I’VE BECOME THE CHIP! Gali and Devlin are jacking in again for a second dip in to the Bargain Bin virtual world of Lawnmower Man 2: Beyond Cyberspace/Jobe’s War! Following the bonkers original, Cybergod Jobe Smith is now a bafflingly recast, surgically repaired double amputee played by Matt Frewer, indentured to a mean-spirited techno institute to become the architect of a new digital world using the magical Chiron Chip. The Chiron’s creator, brilliant scientist-turned-dread locked hippie weirdo and blouse enthusiast Dr. Benjamin Trace (Patrick Bergin), is enlisted by returning child star Austin O’Brien’s Peter to help save his friend from another round of power-mad mania. Join us in this inexplicable futurescape of technobabble, pre-teen pandering, hyperactive improv, and superfluous vacuum cleaner tubes, as we try and make sense of this aggressively bizarre sequel. Ghost World (2001) - Episode 20
You guys up for some reggae tonight? Devlin has delved back in to his angsty late adolescence and picked the 2001 graphic novel adaptation Ghost World for this Throwback episode. Snarky, newly graduated (well, one of them anyway) Enid and Rebecca are finally free from the tyranny of high school, but the question of what comes next tests their symbiotic friendship to breaking point. Rebecca (Scarlett Johansson) wants to find a job and an apartment to embark on the road to adulthood, while Enid (Thora Birch) continues to rebel without a cause, and finds a new partner in disgruntlement in the form of middle-aged record obsessive Seymour (Steve Buscemi). Convenience store nunchucks, daytime Satanists, and tampons in teacups ensue, as Gali and Patrick join Devlin on this Rewind to his own shameful turn-of-the-millennium past of wallet chains and cringy sulk-metal, when he discovered this dark comedy that pulls no punches about the downsides of growing up. Under Siege 2 : Dark Territory (1995) - Episode 19 BARGAIN BIN
NOBODY BEATS ME IN THE KITCHEN. Welcome back to the Bargain Bin, as we go full steam ahead on the 1995 Steven Seagal-starring choo-choo beat ‘em up sequel Under Siege 2: Dark Territory. Seagal reprises his role as the stoic chef/ass-kicker Casey Ryback, accompanying his snarky teenage niece Sarah (Katherine Heigl) on a cross country train journey to her father’s graveside. When the train is taken over by a big ol’ crew of baddies led by eccentric nerdlinger Travis Dane for the purposes of using a space laser to make earthquakes (really), Ryback is in a race against time to punch literally everyone before Dane can blow up the Pentagon. Intergalactic voyeurism, coconut explosives, Looney Tunes death scenes and 60 minute, rubber-and-leather-bondage CD-ROMs. All the way from South Korea, Matt once again joins Gali & Devlin as they venture together in to Dark Territory. Will they rediscover an action classic, or will this be a train wreck in more ways than one? Wonder Boys (2000) - Episode 18
Welcome to our series Pulling Focus, where each of our hosts introduces the other to a personally beloved film which they feel has been overlooked or underrated. This time, Gali encourages Devlin to FINALLY sit down and watch the 2000 Michael Douglas lit-com Wonder Boys, from director Curtis Hanson. Michael Douglas’ Grady Tripp is a borderline burnt-out literature professor coasting on the reputation of his debut novel while deep in the mire of failing to produce its follow-up. His rocky romance with Frances McDormand’s university chancellor is further complicated by the appearance of his chaotic editor (Robert Downey Jr.), a troubled and earnest young upstart student in his lit. class (Tobey Maguire), and a blind, surly bulldog named Poe. With a cast littered with Marvel movie alumni, a change-of-pace performance from Douglas, and a reputation as a box office bomb, has Gali unearthed a hidden gem for Devlin, or have its charms faded over the years?  If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @PatrickWaggett (Patrick). TOP GUN (1986) - Episode 17
I WANT SOME BUTTS! Gali has picked out Tony Scott's magnum opus of fighter jet machismo, 1986’s Top Gun, for this Throwback episode. Maverick loose cannon Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) gets his shot to be the best of the best at the elite Top Gun academy, where he competes in spectacular aerial combat exercises against Val Kilmer's stone cold Ice Man while trying to attract the attentions of his instructor, Kelly McGillis' Charlie. Harassment via karaoke, faceless Commie baddies and a guitar riff so sweet they play it 36 times - will Gali convince Devlin and Patrick to join him in the Danger Zone, or are they entering a flat spin of nostalgia before crashing spectacularly in to the mountains of cliché?   If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @PatrickWaggett (Patrick). Ratcatcher (1999) - Episode 16
On this episode, Devlin introduces Gali to one of his favourites, and offers an introduction to a film which has flown under the radar over the last few years: Lynne Ramsay's 1999 feature debut Ratcatcher. James, a sensitive young boy on the cusp of adolescence, tries to navigate the rubbish strewn-streets of an East Glasgow housing estate in dustman-strike-ravaged 1973. Racked with a level of guilt for which he is emotionally unprepared after the death of a friend, he seeks an escape from his impoverished surroundings that seems impossible to achieve. We talk about the formative works and influences of one of the most interesting filmmakers working today, as Devlin finally forces Gali to watch a film he's been recommending for 15 years. Will it be worth the wait?  If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @PatrickWaggett (Patrick). Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) - Episode 15
BLESS YOUR BEAUTIFUL HIIIIIIIIDE! Patrick is back, and he brought the rootin'est, rootin'est, barn-danciest rip-roarin’ Western musical Seven Brides For Seven Brothers. Large bearded man Adam rides into town to find himself a wife to bring back to his frontier ranch, but “forgets” to tell new bride Milly about his six also large brothers. While she teaches them proper manners, Adam has a different scheme to get them all married off. Multiple jaunty kidnappings ensue, replete with spectacular dance numbers, weird lyrics about sleeping with livestock, and colour-coded fancy shirts. Will Devlin and Gali thank Patrick for introducing them to the show, or is it all a soft-shoe-shuffle too far?  If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @PatrickWaggett (Patrick). AUDITION (1999) - Episode 14
きりきりきり! On this Throwback, first time Rewinder and good friend Matt joins us all the way from South Korea to discuss his first brush with Takashi Miike’s seminal romantic drama-turned-nightmare fuel Audition. Lonely Tokyo widower Aoyama turns to an old friend in his quest to find a new wife to share his life with. His idea? An audition for a new movie, where Aoyama can take his pick of the applicants – a foregone conclusion once he sets his sights on the shy, beautiful, sensitive Asami. And then everything turns horrible. I’m sure you know this by now, the film is 20 years old. But if not, yeah, spoilers. But has this infamous provocation retained its capacity to shock, or has it aged about as well as a dog bowl full of sick? Join Gali, Devlin and Matt as they open up the mystery sack.  If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @scariousartists (Matt). Mortal Kombat (1995) - Episode 13 BARGAIN BIN
GET OVER HERE! Another rummage in the bargain bin yields the 1995 beat-‘em-up video game adaptation Mortal Kombat, directed by Paul “Not That Paul Anderson” W.S. Anderson. A handful of fighters are chosen to defend the realm of Earth from the evil ruler of Outworld in a brutal competition that will determine the fate of billions (he he he...sorry). Among them are a lapsed kung fu fighter of indeterminate religion, a cocky Hollywood action star, and, um, some sort of cop maybe? Quips, brawls, styrofoam palaces, and oh god so much techno. Will Gali and Devlin find a flawless victory, or will there be a FATALITY?  If you have any questions, comments or ideas for future episodes you can contact us on Twitter @rewindmoviecast, @galithegreek (Gali) and @QuillLicker (Devlin and @PatrickWaggett (Patrick). Dances with Wolves (1990) - Episode 12
TATANKA! Devlin takes us on a Throwback to the never-ending Sunday afternoons of his childhood with Kevin Costner’s OSCAR-winning frontier epic DANCES WITH WOLVES. Wounded Civil War soldier John Dunbar’s unusual act of battlefield heroism allows him to choose his next posting, and he elects for a life of seclusion in an abandoned fort at the very edge of civilisation. But his solitude is interrupted when he finds himself drawn in to the local Sioux tribe, whose curiosity and burgeoning friendship has him questioning his allegiances. Discussions on the power of moustache characterization, appropriate fart noises, and inordinate praise for horse acting ensue. Will Gali, Patrick and Devlin share a peace pipe and bask in the magic hour glow of the Dakota plains, or will the war drums boom as opinions are let fly like arrows? The Lawnmower Man (1992) - Episode 11 BARGAIN BIN
CyberChrist on a bike! A second dip in to the Bargain Bin yields the 1992 virtual reality trip THE LAWNMOWER MAN, starring Pierce Brosnan and Jeff Fahey. Improbably named scientician Dr. Larry Angelo is using this latest technology to increase intelligence, and has the perfect subject in naïve, developmentally challenged stereotype Jobe Smith, a local lawnmower whose new-found powers quickly grow out of control. Murder chimps, shirtless diarising, inconsistent pronunciations of the word “Fahey”, and excessive evaluation of the world’s first cybersex scene: Gali, Devlin and Patrick are strapped in to their gyroscopes and ready to jack in to the neural net.

Volcano (1997) - Episode 10 BARGAIN BIN
GITOUTTATHERE! The Rewind team are taking their first dip in to the Bargain Bin – a new series that takes a break from the Throwbacks to focus on the ubiquitous trash that we’ve passively watched a hundred times and subjecting them to a level of scrutiny that they almost certainly don’t deserve. First up is VOLCANO, a film that confronts the ridiculously implausible idea that 28-year-old Anne Heche would swoon for the granite-hewn furrowed brow that is Tommy Lee Jones. And the almost as implausible idea that a volcano would bubble up in downtown LA. Prepare to get lavabombed with fake science and heavy-handed messages about racism, as the action flows thick and slow, just like the gelatinous lava which is sweeping down Wilshere Blvd. Gali and Devlin jump in with both feet (R.I.P. Stan) and invite you to revel in a good old fashioned ‘90s disaster, in more sense than one. Rocky (1976) - Episode 9
Gali has tipped his hand and selected a personal favourite, the archetypal “inspirational sports movie” ROCKY. We follow low-ranking local Philadelphia boxer Rocky Balboa, a soft-centred brute who spends his days enforcing for a local loan shark (while ironically avoiding the use of violence). Lamenting his lack of initiative, confronted with the stagnation of his big fight dreams, and pining for the painfully shy pet store employee he visits every day, his fortunes are changed in an instant when he gets a million-to-one shot at the world heavyweight title held by the slick, charismatic champ Apollo Creed. Written by and starring Sylvester Stallone (before the human growth hormone) we go the distance to review our first film from the 1970s. Will the team eat lighting and crap thunder? Or choke down a pint glass of raw eggs? Seconds out. Round one. Ding. Ding. The Monster Squad (1987) - Episode 8
Welcome to the show, BAND-AID BREATH. Patrick’s first ever podcast selection is the 1987 kids-versus-creatures adventure comedy The Monster Squad. When Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein’s Monster, The Mummy and The Creature from the Black Lagoon converge on a small town in search of a sacred amulet that controls the fate of the world, only a motley gang of preteen horror fiends are qualified to stand in their way. With a script co-written by the original superstar screenwriter Shane Black and effects created by the legendary Stan Winston, we revisit Fred Dekker’s sophomore directorial effort. Wolfman may have nards, but does this film have legs? Or will our podcasters toss(metaphorical) dynamite in to the clubhouse? Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) - Episode 7
BOO! It’s Devlin’s favourite time of year, and he’s selected the strange outlier of the Halloween franchise, 1982’s Halloween III: Season of the Witch. A near-catatonic patient is brutally killed on Dr Dan Challis’ (Tom Atkins) shift, and the mysterious assailant sets himself ablaze. Desperate to make sense of this, Dan accompanies the murdered man’s daughter to the factory of Conal Cochrane (Dan O’Herlihy), Halloween mask entrepreneur and small-town philanthropist, to investigate. Robots full of lemon curd, drunk doctoring, stolen 'henge', and an advertising jingle that’ll burrow in to your head like a tonne of bugs – join Gali, Devlin and Rewind Movie Podcast debutant Patrick to see if we’re in for a treat, or a trick (like, say, sticky toilet paper, or the Dead Dwarf Gag). Boogie Nights (1997) - Episode 6 PART 2
PART 2 Gali has chosen to mark the passing of the peerless Burt Reynolds by revisiting the Paul Thomas Anderson (PTA) porn industry epic, Boogie Nights. 17 year old Eddie Adams has one special gift. And pornographic film auteur Jack Horner intends to share that gift, making Eddie the biggest star in the world (in all senses) as the dashing Dirk Diggler. But, all may not be as rosy as it seems in the San Fernando Valley as drugs, hubris and violence creep in when the day-glo 1970s meet the me-generation 1980s. Devlin and Gali head to the Hot Traxx to watch a movie which they both found a huge inspiration in late adolescence (not for the reasons you might think!), discuss the influence PTA has had on them, and try and sound all serious while simultaneously talking about enormous genitals. Demons (1985) - Episode 5
As the dark nights draw in and autumn clamps its icy jaws around the last squirming remnants of summer, Devlin reminisces about his first brush with an actual horror movie: Lamberto Bava’s Italo-splatter mainstay Demons. A mysterious masked stranger invites a motley selection of viewers to a grand picture-house for a free movie screening they’ll never forget, as the infernal shenanigans on screen spill out in to the auditorium itself and turn the assembled audience in to murderous, possessed…well, demons. Soft rock punks scraping cocaine out of car upholstery, the world’s saddest anniversary night out, Chekov’s samurai sword and Berlin’s best pimp. What will first time viewer Gali make of this hot nonsense? Will Devlin find his childhood memories popped like a giant green hell-pimple? It’s all in this episode of The Rewind Movie Podcast! The Silence of the Lambs (1991) - Episode 4
Gali's pick takes us to dark places this time out, as we follow trainee FBI Agent Clarice Starling to the cell of the brutal man-eater Hannibal Lector in the 1991 OSCAR-winning classic, The Silence of the Lambs. As she follows the clues laid by one monster in order to catch another and save the life of a young woman from his clutches. Jodie Foster's Clarice has to also face her own difficult past, and the watchful eyes of her male law enforcement colleagues. Featuring an iconic Anthony Hopkins performance, Jonathan Demme's thriller/horror (delete as appropriate) is ready for Gali and Devlin to carve up and serve. Will it be bon appétit, or will they find it leaves a sour taste after all these years? We would love to hear from you!!! Predator 2 (1990) - Episode 3
In this sequel to the beloved Arnie classic, Devlin becomes the hunter and baits Gali into a potential rant as they find Predator 2 in their crosshairs. The Predator is doing some sight-seeing in LA, and Danny Glover is somehow the only one who can stop him. This has it all: sun, sweat, gangs and Gary Busey. Before Jack Black in 'I Still Know What You Did Last Summer', Predator 2 held the trophy for the most ridiculous depiction of a Jamaican character. The door swings both ways- how will Gali and Devlin rate this film now that they are no longer 8 years old?! Lets go Back to the Future (1997) and see the lions, tigers and bears, oh my.

Scarface (1983) - Episode 2
This time out, Gali has picked Brian De Palma's classic 1983 gangster movie, SCARFACE. Al Pacino inhabits one of his most iconic roles as the ambitious Cuban immigrant Tony Montana. We follow as he scales the drug trade in Miami, from lowly enforcer to gilded kingpin. Put on your dancing shoes, turn up the neon, and rush rush to the yeyo: with ethnologically questionable casting and a killer soundtrack, will Gali and Devlin get high on their own supply, or grab the chainsaw and cut the movie to pieces?

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (1994) Episode 1
With the first pick, Devlin chooses Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. Hot on the heels of Bram Stoker's Dracula, we examine this obstensibly faithful adaptation (hence the authorial namecheck!) Genius young physician-in-training Victor Frankenstein (Branagh himself) uses personal tragedy as the catalyst for his quest to defy death itself, by creating an entirely new life, but soon finds that there are consequences to dabbling in the realms of the gods. Featuring floppy dancing, quasi-incestuous relationships, John Cleese's giant teeth and Robert De Niro as Sloth from the Goonies's angry older brother, will Gali and Devlin find a jolt of pure electricity, or just a table full of decaying meat parts?
