8s in Relationship (Season Opener)

8s in Relationship (Season Opener)

I guarantee this has happened to you before: You're having a nice chat with someone and they find out you're an 8 and they exclaim in surprise: "No way! I never would have guessed." And you are left wondering what exactly they expected from an 8, because you're just being you...

This is the season we maybe find out what the disconnect is. What are THEY seeing that we aren't. What are WE missing. In this episode, we kick us off with an educated guess as to what each type will say we get right and wrong in relationship.

Ep. 54 Carrie Forgets to Breathe

Ep. 54 Carrie Forgets to Breathe

Carrie. Tritype 837. When you need an app to remind you to breathe, you probably have a lot of forward energy going on in you. Carrie is a quintessential Mover and Shaker. All movement, no pause.

Ep. 53 Tori's Gush is Showing (And she doesn't like it)

Ep. 53 Tori's Gush is Showing (And she doesn't like it)

Tori. Tritype 862. "The Rescuer" has been scrapped for "The Shield."
This tritype might be the one that is most at war with it's soft gooey center. (One of you once called it a gooey lava cake). They are very very aware it's there, and very very unhappy at the idea it might show. And so, in many ways, the sheild they use to protect others, they use to protect themselves too. In the words of our podcast tagline: "Letting you inside the armour" is the work of all of us 8s.

Ep. 52 Isaac Lives inside an Abyssal Cosmic Playground

Ep. 52 Isaac Lives inside an Abyssal Cosmic Playground

Isaac. Tritype 845. Some 8s slam a wall down on the dark and the negative. Others 8s, like Isaac, slam the wall down on the light, bright and the positive. The common denominator is the wall. 8s are good at walls. This one's for all of our 8s who are a haven to those that have inner monsters that scare them. Isaac and other 8s of this tritype aren't afraid of monsters, or the darkness. (Note: Due to spotty internet, this episode sounds a bit different. We had to splice in re-recorded audio later.)

Ep. 51 Eryn & Jo {Part 2}

Here's part 2 of a two part interview conducted by none other than Keri aka Cocaine Sunshine in celebration of recording fifty episodes of the Enneagram 8 Podcast. This sticking with a thing... It's not a thing we do, with our restlessness and our forward momentum. We're still here because you keep letting us know that it matters. We're still here because we now know we have thousands of 8 siblings out there that get us. Thank you for all of it.

Ep. 49 Megan scares people in elevators

Ep. 49 Megan scares people in elevators

Megan. Tritype 836. Teacher, beach lifeguard, event planner, aspiring park ranger, and soon-to-be member of law enforcement, this girl is a doer of many things. But the theme she sees in it all is a duty and competency. She is dutifully the VERY BEST at all the things she does. This is another of the most reactive tritypes, but most of it stays inside. Her 3 keeps her aware of "the game" that the group is playing, which mitigates some of the fallout. But, every now and then, the verbal bombs still go off and stuff gets blown up.

Ep. 48 Yentl isn't Gentle

Ep. 48 Yentl isn't Gentle

Yentl (rhythms with gentle). Tritype 846. We laugh at the irony of a name that rhythms with one thing this tritype has the hardest time being. As a truth teller, Yentl is made to track inconsistencies, hone in on falseness, and to SAY IT. Even gentle people get flack for calling out hidden truth, so imagine how lonely these 8s can be sometimes. We reflected on the gift of a simple conversation between two 8s, and how, for an hour, two strangers could hold space for each other and understand.

Ep. 47 Jules is very Virago

Ep. 47 Jules is very Virago

Jules. Tritype 874. Made to drive forward in freedom and adventure and creativity, but held in a life where all of that was weighed down like concrete. Jules gives us insight into how we end up in places we never though possible, but then how we get out of them again, expanding into who we always were inside.

Ep. 46 Amanda is a Bougie Bitch

Ep. 46 Amanda is a Bougie Bitch

Amanda. Tritype 835. Seemingly impenetrable, but soft as the cashmere she wears, if you give her time. Ambitious yoga instructor, and advocate of capsule wardrobes, Amanda highlights this tritype's practical approach to life-- practical in a badass-bougie kinda way.

Ep. 44 Rachel has Little Lady Syndrome

Rachel. Tritype 826. Five feet of feisty, this military veteran, and mom of five offers BIG help to the people around her, but in a way she's had to temper over the years. 8 help is essential in the world, but not everyone is ready for it.

Ep. 40 Heather the Ultrarunner

Ep. 40 Heather the Ultrarunner

Heather. Tritype 835. Known as the quickest problem solvers, but the least in touch with their feelings.

Heather’s Bio: Growing up, I spent most of my time in the 5 zone. However, I did learn early that people didn't want me to be "part of the group", so I chose early not to "fit in" and pursue my own interests. I'm a moderate jack of most trades. I'm not really great at one thing, but I am eager to explore all options or challenges. // ISTP - "like sticking jello to a wall". Not only do I not like to conform, I enjoy several different single sports [ultra-running, yoga, cross country, singles tennis]. I thought this was mainly because of my introvert side, but it could also likely be I prefer to match my own energy. I get frustrated and confused when people can't keep up with my energy. Even when I don't think I can find any, I force it to happen, so I can fulfill my 7 wing of adventure. // Protector in social work, helping people advocate for themselves. In each chance I get I teach them to "fish", so that they can more independent and learn to fight on their own eventually. I hold a conflict resolution certificate and am a certified mediator, volunteering with local courts. This is where and how I discovered the enneagram. // Faults. I stir the pot, even after I'm told not to stir the pot. Learning when not to with loved ones, but I still "die" on several hills because I'm stubborn. I'm growing drastically and interested in continuing on this path towards a healthier me in a 2 by listening to this awesome podcast and others recommended. . I will fight for those I love any day without rest! 💙

Ep. 26 (INTERVIEW) Dr. Jerome Lubbe & Types 7, 4, 3, 1 and 2

Did you do your homework yet? If you want to get the most of episode 25 and 26, here it is again: Back in episode 7, Jo shared her enneagram manifesto. It was based in large part on the work of Dr. Jerome Lubbe, and his work mapping the enneagram onto the brain. It was a short episode, and we recommend going back to give it a listen. Next, we really recommend taking the Riso Hudson test and looking over your results before this episode. What Dr. Jerome unpacks here will have a lot more impact if you understand how your brain is mapped out.
Last week's episode covered ways to access the energy of types 9, 5 and 6. This week, we dig into the rest of the types.

Ep. 24 Moving towards (Don't come at me bruh... I'll come at you)

Ep. 24 Moving towards (Don't come at me bruh... I'll come at you)

Shadow Layer #4: Moving towards is baked right into our brains. We use the part of our brain that deals with fight response, immediacy, reactivity. We are willing to DO fight. In fact, we are compelled to do fight in order to survive. Engaging and moving towards a threat feels safer than waiting for it to come find us and take us by surprise.

Ep. 23 (INTERVIEW) Jim Zartman on Health

Ep. 23 (INTERVIEW) Jim Zartman on Health

Eight Health #1: Jim is the co-founder of The Art of Growth, and co-hosts an enneagram panels podcast also called The Art of Growth.

4:00: Forced transformational moments. "I did not do it on purpose... I wouldn't have gone here willingly. It had to be forced on me."
7:30: Eight denial. "The starting point isn't to crack it all open, but to know it's safe to do so."
11:10 Betrayal. "It's such a visceral experience of violation [that the] 'You're dead to me' isn't a choice that's being made, it is as a reaction. It is something I notice after the fact."
13:00 What is Health? "Health is moving from the exaggeration to integration...
16:30 "A lot of times, for 8s, we don't move towards health until we experience pain."
18:05: Boundaries. How much do we put ourselves out there and take the hits? "Endlessly..." We have to decide if we want to become open or closed, and "I want to be really intentional that I am creating myself in [an open] direction..." And that will require "going back in" again and again, even if we don't want to.
21:00: Jim's poem Bless Them and Go On. "We cannot blame or shame them... they carried you to where they themselves could not go. In kindness turn and thank them. Bless them with all your love. Bless them, and go on." An invitation to move towards, rather than we held prisoner by what was behind.
24:40: Physical health is tied to emotional health. A discussion of the book "Driven" by Bessel van der Kolk
29:00: The tricky thing about 8s and meditation. Jim recommends The Wilhof Breathing Method
33:00: Integrating the three centers.
36:40: Where are we heading? "You are the best expert on you."
43:30: The value of taking ownership of our stuff and being held accountable in different ways.
44:40: Knowing we are deeply ok in THIS moment. Changing the saying Fake it till you make it' to 'Do it unnaturally until you do it naturally.' "I know if I stick with it it'll become more natural... I'm not there YET. (But I'm moving towards it)"

Ep. 22 Lust (I'm ALL in)

Ep. 22 Lust (I'm ALL in)

Shadow Layer #3: This might be the deepest darkest pit we fall into. We think it's because it feels so so good to go where our body leads us. But, just like a fire on a dry day... if we aren't careful, we'll burn the forest down.

Ep. 21 Strength (I'm tougher than you)

Ep. 21 Strength (I'm tougher than you)

Shadow Layer #2: This tough act is one of the most quintessentially 8 things. However we define strength, it plays a big role in how 8s orient themselves to the world. While we don't think strength is just an ego construct, but a tangible offering we bring to the world, problems crop up when we treat humanity like a giant boxing match (in which we always come out with the title belt). What if, rather than flexing a stronger-than-you attitude, we simply stop at this: I am strong.

Ep. 20 Self Sufficiency (I don't need you)

Ep. 20 Self Sufficiency (I don't need you)

Shadow Layer #1: And so we begin a long foray into the habits 8s fall into that keep them firmly settled into the heart of their personality. We can get by in life staying right there in the middle, but that isn't growth. That's staying stuck.
Self Sufficiency is the allergic reaction we 8s have to being needy. We've worked hard to stand firmly on our own two feet, using a bunch of confirmation bias along the way that people let us down. This is one of those "shadow layers" that has an undeniably useful side to it. Listen in as we sort out the blessing from the curse.

Ep. 19 Our Dark Twin: 8 shadow side

Ep. 18 Fearlessness is not a thing

Ep. 18 Fearlessness is not a thing

You're afraid of something. Keep telling yourself you're not, and I'll keep calling you a liar. As 8s, we spend a lot of time killing our fears dead, and denying the ones we can't kill. That's not very helpful. There's something about bringing a thing to light that makes it lose it's power. So... What are you afraid of?

Ep. 16 The making of an Eight

Ep. 16 The making of an Eight

We've all heard the saying about life throwing you lemons... Well, when life threw us Eights lemons, we did NOT make lemonade. We made barricades-- some of us made really thick ones. The making of an Eight is not really a mysterious thing once you understand how our brains work. In this episode it's really clear that two little Eight girls with different childhoods both manage to mostly end up in the same place. It's really true, this Enneagram stuff.

Ep. 15 New Year, same me

"If I wanted to change something, why would I wait for January 1st?" This seems to be the sentiment among most of us 8s. We're up for a great party, and time well spent with friends, family & good food. But, resolutions? Nah. A new me? No thanks. Happy New Year to all of you, and happy every-other-day too!

Ep. 14 Eight Voices: Christmas

Ep. 13 Holidays are complicated...

Ep. 13 Holidays are complicated...

When we asked you what you wanted to talk about for our holiday episode, the answer was RELATIONSHIPS. It seems 8s have complicated feelings about the holidays. This has everything to do with the usual interplay of our intensely relational, but autonomous selves and the people around us who don't think like we do. We answered all your questions from our vantage point, and while it might not offer any fixes, at the very least, it's our way of telling you aren't a lone. We understand.

Ep. 11 (MINI) Who needs a heart when you have a sword instead?

Ep. 11 (MINI) Who needs a heart when you have a sword instead?

Before we launch into a discussion about childhood wounds & 8s, we think it's important to introduce an intriguing theory called Object Relations. It suggests that we formed our type structure (in all its quirky glory) in relationship to the ways our caregivers failed to provide either the Nurture or Protection function. We explore yet another set of triads: Frustration, Attachment and Rejection.  But, we dig a little deeper into what this means for 8 brains as they're shaped in those first few years.  RESOURCES: The Triads (Frustration, Attachment & rejection) // Big Hormone Enneagram Episode 36 (Object Relations explained. Ep. 10 Stepping out of our eight-shaped ego rut

Ep. 10 Stepping out of our eight-shaped ego rut

We've gotten pretty tired of our egos. A lot of those "I ams" we've been telling ourselves don't really fit anymore. So, we're rewriting the narrative about who we really are one "I am" at a time.

Ep. 9 My ego isn't bigger than yours. It's just louder.

Ep. 9 My ego isn't bigger than yours. It's just louder.

You have an ego. We all do. It's all those "I am" statements you've built into your identity over the years. The 8 ego has been notoriously labelled as a big one. Maybe it is, but we insist that it's no bigger than any other type's ego. It's just a lot louder. In this episode, we name some of the "I ams" that we held on tight to in order to survive childhood. But, they're kind of getting old now. Next week we'll talk about why we need to break out of our ego rut and change the narrative about who we are. Who do you say you are? Listen in, maybe some of these will resonate.

Ep. 7 (MINI) Jo's Enneagram 8 Podcast manifesto

Ep. 7 (MINI) Jo's Enneagram 8 Podcast manifesto

Last week, we gave you a sense of how we interact with the enneagram. This mini episode goes a lot further. This is our "podcast white paper." Jo lays out clearly and plainly what we've chosen to build into our enneagram tool kit, and what we've discarded. She explains that faith and science and plain practicality intersect in the way we use the enneagram system. We think you'll appreciate the frankness and the clarity.
