Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City Special

In this exciting episode, Sam is joined by the Bret Killoran and Dashen Naidoo, who were on the team behind the sound for Welcome to Raccoon City. They discuss the Easter eggs for RE videogame fans, working on the reboot of this acclaimed movie franchise, their approach to the sound and the mix, working with Johannes Roberts and how their roles compliment each other in the process!

"Returning to the origins of the massively popular RESIDENT EVIL franchise, fan and filmmaker Johannes Roberts brings the games to life for a whole new generation of fans. In RESIDENT EVIL: WELCOME TO RACCOON CITY, once the booming home of pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corporation, Raccoon City is now a dying Midwestern town. The company’s exodus left the city a wasteland…with great evil brewing below the surface. When that evil is unleashed, a group of survivors must work together to uncover the truth behind Umbrella and make it through the night."

Composer, Peter Baert (The Water Man)

Composer, Peter Baert (The Water Man)

Welcome to Season 5 and 2022! This is the 9th year we've been running and we're already setting up a host of great guests as well as our new intro theme from our very own Alyx Jones!

To kick off this year we have Composer Peter Baert! Last year, Sam spoke to composer Peter Baert about his journey as a composer, his work on fantasy epic "The Water Man" with how he created the "monster synth", the differences between working on movies vs commercials and more!

"Belgian composer Peter Baert is making his first major Hollywood feature debut with his score in Golden-Globe nominated actor David Oyelowo’s upcoming drama The Water Man (Executive Produced by Oprah Winfrey). In the film, a young boy named Gunner (Lonnie Chavis) sets out on a quest to save his ill mother (Rosario Dawson) by searching for a mythic figure who possesses the secret to immortality, the Water Man. *Coming to U.S. theaters May 7.

Peter first met David at his commercial sound studio in Brussels a few years back when he was in town shooting the BBC miniseries Les Misérables. Soon after, Peter learned that David would be making his directorial debut with The Water Man. The storyline resonated very deeply with Peter because he too had an ill mother, who he lost to cancer in 2008. He felt like if he was ever going to score a feature film, it should be this one. He contacted David, and he agreed to send Peter the script for which he created a 30-minute demo with several different musical themes, which would eventually land him the opportunity.

The music of The Water Man is a mix of electronic, drones, and classical. Peter felt the score had to be adventurous at some points and emotional at others, without being too poignant. He and his team utilized the water man’s screams and sighs to create “The Water Man Synth,” which they processed through long delays, modular tools, and tape echoes. David wanted a motherly presence to be present in the music. To accomplish this, Peter worked with vocalist Judith Okon, who has a similar timbre of Rosario Dawson, and created the “Mother Synth.”

Big thanks to Toivo Kallio for mastering!

Composer, Dominik Scherrer (The Serpent, Baptiste, The Widow)

Composer, Dominik Scherrer (The Serpent, Baptiste, The Widow)

(TSAP S04E15)

In this episode, Sam is joined by composer, Dominik Scherrer. They discuss his work for Netflix crime drama The Serpent, whilst also diving into Dominik's journey into music and his career so far.

With the Serpent, the majority of the series takes place in Bangkok, with the rest taking place in various locations, including: Hong Kong, Paris, New Zealand, and New York. Dominik composed a lot of the score on location in Bangkok and took inspiration from the urban, epic, and sinister feel that the city encapsulates. A portion of the score was recorded in Thailand – rhythm sections, drums, gongs, and other Thai instruments — all of which Dominik sampled to create more of a risqué sound to match the tone of the series.

"Dominik Scherrer has created award-winning music for some of the finest film and television dramas in recent years. He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for the critically-acclaimed series The Missing, and recently won his second Ivor Novello Award for his score on Netflix’s Requiem, which he co-composed with Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes."

Sound Designer, Toivo Kallio (Returnal, Angry Birds: Reloaded)

Sound Designer, Toivo Kallio (Returnal, Angry Birds: Reloaded)

(TSAP S04E13)

In this special in-person interview, Sam chats to our very own Toivo Kallio! Toivo is not only a highly talented Sound Designer at Rovio Entertainment, he also kindly lends his skills editing and mastering our podcast episodes!

They discuss his journey into audio, his talent and affinity for the art of Foley, working on Returnal & Angry Birds: Reloaded and more!

"Toivo Kallio is a sound professional from Finland who's been a bit of a movie buff and a video game addict since the early 90's. Toivo's ambition for sound and music really kicked in during senior secondary school when he got his first PC computer.

Toivo's first digital sound projects were game audio modifications that he made just for fun and at the same time learned structural principals of game sound design. Toivo also watched a lot of Making Of material about his favorite movies. After a video/short film course Toivo felt that his future would have something to do with television, film, games and other media.

After his 6 months in the Finnish military Toivo found a website about The Institute of Design in Lahti. Surprisingly he got in with the first try! The four years Toivo spent there were a big achievement for him. He graduated from the film school department in May 2010, specializing in cinematic sound design.

Nowadays Toivo is still an enthusiast of sound and has worked in the field of sound design since 2010. Toivo is also an occasional voice-over actor and has done quite a lot of field recording for television (both on location and in studio) and film productions between 2010 and 2018. One of Toivo's biggest focuses has been the art of Foley. In early 2018 he started as a full-time game audio designer in Housemarque, and in early 2021 he got to Rovio where his game sound design career continues."

Composer, Raphael Reed (Crisis, The Walrus and the WhistleBlower)

(TSAP S04E06)

In this episode, Sam Hughes speaks with composer Raphael Reed about his journey into writing music, being a working composer in Canada, his influences and inspirations as well as his philosophies on the process! A great honest and creative conversation worth listening to!

Raphaël Reed is a Canadian composer and sound artist based in Montreal. Trained in classical guitar from an early age and a graduate from the University of Montreal in Music Research and Contemporary Creation, his style is an innovative hybrid integrating analog synth, electro-acoustic gestures, and classical instruments.

After being active in the underground music scene in Montreal, he's currently dedicating most of his time as a music composer. In film and television, his compositions include the soundtracks of Crisis (2021) from Director Nicholas Jarecki. Cliff Martinez being an advisor for the creation of the soundtrack, this experience has been a milestone in Raphaël's career and a consolidation of his music personality. His other music scores include, amongst others, The Walrus and the WhistleBlower (2020), Louise Lecavalier: In Motion (2018), Révolution (2018), 1:54 (2016), and A Little Bit Of Zombie (2012).

In largescale live events, he co-composed the opening soundtrack for the 2014 UEFA Champions League final held in Portugal, he directed and composed the music for the Chimelong International Circus in China (2017), and composed the music for the Cité de l’Énergie in Shawinigan, Quebec (2018) and for The Carnaval de Québec (2019). For Cité mémoire, he composed the music for two events celebrating John Lennon's bed-in at The Fairmount Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal: a virtual reality interactive installation taking place in the bedroom (suite 1742) and a video playing in the hotel lobby directed by Michel Lemieux and Michel Marc Bouchard.

His music has been heard in hundreds of advertisements, most notably the Skechers ad presented at the Super Bowl (2012) and the international publicity campaign for Dove Legacy (2015).

(TSAP S03E19)

Sam speaks with composer, Ilan Eshkeri, about his journey into music composition, his recent work on Ghost of Tsushima, collaborating with Shigeru Umebayashi, Space Station Earth and more!

"Ilan Eshkeri is an award winning composer, artist, songwriter, producer and creator. Eshkeri’s work is performed in concert halls, theatres, galleries, on film & television and video games; his eclectic body of work is linked by his love of narrative.

Ilan is currently creating music for A Perfect Planet, his fourth collaboration with the legendary naturalist David Attenborough. Recently, Ilan and Ralph Fiennes completed their third film together – a biopic about Rudolf Nureyev, ‘The White Crow’. This followed the creation of a ballet ‘Narcissus and Echo’, choreographed by famed dancer Sergei Polunin with set designs by David LaChapelle and a ballet commission from Rambert Dance Company.

Ilan has collaborated with Burberry on a landmark fashion show, where he composed and conducted a choral symphonic suite, ‘Reliquary’, which then reached no.1 in the UK classical chart. Before this, he worked with astronaut Tim Peake and the European Space Agency on a film documenting his mission to the International Space Station. Ilan continues his collaboration with Tim Peake and ESA with his spell-binding show ‘Space Station Earth’ last performed in Stockholm to an audience of 10,000. Other performance highlights include a unique concert for thousands in the gardens of the Louvre in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London and the Rudolfinum in Prague."

NOTE: The quality of Ilan's audio was lower due to technical issues. Huge thanks to our editor, Toivo Kallio for improving it greatly and we hope you still enjoy this episode.

Composers, Aaron May & David Ridley (VILLAIN, Spanish Pigeon, Boiling Point)

Composers, Aaron May & David Ridley (VILLAIN, Spanish Pigeon, Boiling Point)

(TSAP S03E16)

Sam caught up with composing  duo Aaron May and David Ridley, where they chat about how they met, their musical origins, their recent work on VILLIAN and so much more!

"Aaron May and David Ridley are award-winning composers who collaborate on music for film.

As a duo, they create bold, unique music, with a contemporary-classical and electronic edge.  They throw together their contrasting skill sets to develop rich soundscapes and evocative melodies.  Their collaborative approach brings an openness to the process of writing for film, and a distinct sound-world for each new project.  After scoring several short films, they will make their feature-length debut in 2020 with the score for Villain, a film by Philip Barantini.

With a background in contemporary classical and electroacoustic music, Aaron enjoys working with both music and sound design, and his compositions often blur the lines between the two mediums.  He has composed music and sound for broadcasters including CBBC and BBC Radio 4, and has created multi-channel works for installations in spaces including The V&A, The Science Museum and The Museum of London. He was awarded Best Sound Design: Television Series (Music + Sound Awards 2016) for his work on Messy Goes to Okido (CBBC).

As a multi-instrumentalist, David specialises in piano, violin, viola, and voice and has been involved with orchestras throughout his life.  He has scored over twenty plays and directed music for theatres including the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.  In 2014, he was awarded the MTN Award for Innovation for his experimental electronic score for Lorraine & Alan, which he developed with his theatre company, Bucket Club.

Aaron and David met at The University of Bristol, where they were faculty of arts composition scholars."

The Last of Us Part II Special - Rob Krekel, Audio Lead

The Last of Us Part II Special - Rob Krekel, Audio Lead

(TSAP S03E15)

For those of you who don't know, The Last of Us has a very special place in our hearts. 7 years ago, our VERY FIRST episode of The Sound Architect Podcast, was with Audio Lead on TLOU1 - Phillip Kovats. So, 7 years later when Sam got to speak with Audio Lead (Now Naughty Dog's Audio Director!) Rob Krekel, it made this a very special episode for us here.

Sam chats with Audio Lead, Rob Krekel about the audio for The Last of Us 2, including the glass shatters, environmental sounds as well as all the nitty gritty stuff such as implementation, optimisation, outsourcing, raycasting and more! So get stuck in!

"Today’s podcast is sponsored by Outspoken Audio and their dialogue production tool ‘XenoVox’ which is fully automated, standalone, dialogue production software, designed specifically for game audio.

Reading directly from your Excel script, XenoVox records and prioritizes takes for an unlimited number of actors, and includes the feature called ADP, which plays-back existing assets to prompt other actors in the same conversation flow, as if they were all in the same room together – something to help in the 'new normal'.

Currently working for both AAA and smaller projects alike, you can find out more with a free trial, tutorials and FAQ’s, on their website outspokenaudio.com."

Voice Actor, David Bateson - Hitman 20th Anniversary Special

Voice Actor, David Bateson - Hitman 20th Anniversary Special

(TSAP S03E14)

In this very special episode, Sam Hughes chats with actor David Bateson as he celebrates 20 years of portraying Agent 47 in the acclaimed Hitman series this year.  They discuss how it all began, some of the highlights, how the character has been a part of him for so long and... The Chuckle Brothers?? Plus so much more!

This is definitely one of our best episodes so don't miss this!

"David Bateson has played the leading character of Agent 47 in the Hitman game franchise for 20 years since its first release in 2000.

Agent 47 is an immensely complex character. David Bateson has brought a brooding, melancholic intensity to the Hitman character. His portrayal of a cloned assassin-for-hire is both dangerous and appealing in its flawed humanity.

In the latest entry in the series HITMAN 2, the story of Agent 47 was told in a more personal way than in previous games -starting with his very recruitment as an assassin more than 20 years ago, through to the most challenging contracts that he has ever completed.

Agent 47 must explore his own sense of identity, his relationship with his long-term handler, various intricate characters and roles as part of his professional work, and deal with the revelation that somebody has been tracking his movements for more than two decades. Having voiced Agent 47 for 7 Hitman games, David is intimately familiar with this enigmatic, multifaceted character. His prowess as an actor delivers a varied, different approach to many scenes than were originally conceived. Agent 47 is often required to take on the disguise of others and David convincingly plays a sundry of roles while on occasion, leaving room for the player to pick up a sense of the game’s very dark sense of humour and self-irony.

As the beginning of the game starts 20 years in the past, David’s long and extensive history with the character allowed him to connect with the memories of voicing the character for the first time 20 years ago and build that into the sense of nostalgia that our players would have been feeling at the same time.

He meticulously performs the different personalities and plot developments of Agent 47, whilst maintaining the integrity of the character. Added to which, his subtle and very dark sense of humor draws the player ever deeper into the world of assassination. Disguised as an Estate Agent, he calmly describes the dubious qualities of a house’s various rooms (as seen through the eyes of an assassin) to some prospective buyers while simultaneously planning an assassination, is just one such example.

David has added a new level of depth to the already complex character of Agent 47 while strengthening the relationship of the fans to the personality of this trained assassin."

Matt Morton -Composer (APOLLO 11, The Last Steps, Dinosaur 13)

(TSAP S03E02)

Sam chats with composer, Matt Morton about his career so far and working on the incredible documentary APOLLO 11 that uses archival footage to look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

"When Matt Morton first learned he’d been given the opportunity to score NEON's documentary Apollo 11, his first thoughts were, how can I put such a momentous event in our nation’s history into music, and how can I make my attempt unique? The score the composer created went on to win him a 2019Critics’ Choice Documentary Award. The documentary only uses archival footage from the 1969 mission to the moon, so Morton deliberately decided to only use sounds and instrumentation that existed during that era, but still set out to make the music sound futuristic. The synthesizer was born in the 1960s, which the composer utilized heavily, to create an avant-garde sound.
“I looked at my music as being able to play the role of bridging the gap between 2019 and 1969. Even though I’m using dated instruments, I think it comes off as a bridge to modern people because I’m using modern musical idioms to communicate with them,” says Matt.

A distinct symbolic element that Morton included in a cue was a chopped-up sonogram clip of his niece’s heartbeat, which he says is a reminder to our currently divided nation that we possess the ability to triumph, when we choose to unite.

Jacob Yoffee & Roahn Hylton - Composers (The Age of A.I., Sherwood, Best Shot)

TSAP S03E01 OUT NOW!

In the first episode of the year (and decade 😲), we kick off season 3 with composers Jacob Yoffee and Roahn Hylton.

In this episode Sam discusses with them about scoring YouTube's The Age of A.I. hosted by Robert Downey Jr.,how they began working together, how to compose as a duo, as well as how their contrasting backgrounds of hip-hop and classical lend to each other.
"The composers each have their own musical specialty—Jacob has classical/jazz roots and Roahn has a hip-hop/pop background. Their expertise in opposing genres allows them to broaden the palette on any score they collaborate on and has also enabled them to have a better understanding of one another’s musical sensibilities.

For The Age of A.I., Jacob and Roahn were originally asked to deliver a signature sci-fi sound, which is electronic-heavy. After their initial approach, the duo and their collaborators quickly realized that this wasn’t the right fit for the series. After a great deal of experimentation, they landed on a sound that was more human and organic. The resulting score is mostly orchestral and acoustic chamber music, with some electronic elements and perfectly speaks to the message of the docuseries."
