(TSAP S04E06) In this episode, Sam Hughes speaks with composer Raphael Reed about his journey into writing music, being a working composer in Canada, his influences and inspirations as well as his philosophies on the process! A great honest and creative conversation worth listening to! Raphaël Reed is a Canadian composer and sound artist based in Montreal. Trained in classical guitar from an early age and a graduate from the University of Montreal in Music Research and Contemporary Creation, his style is an innovative hybrid integrating analog synth, electro-acoustic gestures, and classical instruments. After being active in the underground music scene in Montreal, he's currently dedicating most of his time as a music composer. Cliff Martinez being an advisor for the creation of the soundtrack, this experience has been a milestone in Raphaël's career and a consolidation of his music personality. His other music scores include, amongst others, The Walrus and the WhistleBlower (2020), Louise Lecavalier: In Motion (2018), Révolution (2018), 1:54 (2016), and A Little Bit Of Zombie (2012). In largescale live events, he co-composed the opening soundtrack for the 2014 UEFA Champions League final held in Portugal, he directed and composed the music for the Chimelong International Circus in China (2017), and composed the music for the Cité de l’Énergie in Shawinigan, Quebec (2018) and for The Carnaval de Québec (2019). For Cité mémoire, he composed the music for two events celebrating John Lennon's bed-in at The Fairmount Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal: a virtual reality interactive installation taking place in the bedroom (suite 1742) and a video playing in the hotel lobby directed by Michel Lemieux and Michel Marc Bouchard. His music has been heard in hundreds of advertisements, most notably the Skechers ad presented at the Super Bowl (2012) and the international publicity campaign for Dove Legacy (2015). Composers, Aaron May & David Ridley (VILLAIN, Spanish Pigeon, Boiling Point)
(TSAP S03E16) Sam caught up with composing  duo Aaron May and David Ridley, where they chat about how they met, their musical origins, their recent work on VILLIAN and so much more! "Aaron May and David Ridley are award-winning composers who collaborate on music for film. As a duo, they create bold, unique music, with a contemporary-classical and electronic edge.  They throw together their contrasting skill sets to develop rich soundscapes and evocative melodies.  Their collaborative approach brings an openness to the process of writing for film, and a distinct sound-world for each new project.  After scoring several short films, they will make their feature-length debut in 2020 with the score for Villain, a film by Philip Barantini. With a background in contemporary classical and electroacoustic music, Aaron enjoys working with both music and sound design, and his compositions often blur the lines between the two mediums.  He has composed music and sound for broadcasters including CBBC and BBC Radio 4, and has created multi-channel works for installations in spaces including The V&A, The Science Museum and The Museum of London. He was awarded Best Sound Design: Television Series (Music + Sound Awards 2016) for his work on Messy Goes to Okido (CBBC). As a multi-instrumentalist, David specialises in piano, violin, viola, and voice and has been involved with orchestras throughout his life.  He has scored over twenty plays and directed music for theatres including the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company.  In 2014, he was awarded the MTN Award for Innovation for his experimental electronic score for Lorraine & Alan, which he developed with his theatre company, Bucket Club. Aaron and David met at The University of Bristol, where they were faculty of arts composition scholars." Big thanks to Caullum Tennick for editing. Want to sponsor an episode? The Last of Us Part II Special - Rob Krekel, Audio Lead
(TSAP S03E15) For those of you who don't know, The Last of Us has a very special place in our hearts. 7 years ago, our VERY FIRST episode of The Sound Architect Podcast, was with Audio Lead on TLOU1 - Phillip Kovats. So, 7 years later when Sam got to speak with Audio Lead (Now Naughty Dog's Audio Director!) Rob Krekel, it made this a very special episode for us here. Sam chats with Audio Lead, Rob Krekel about the audio for The Last of Us 2, including the glass shatters, environmental sounds as well as all the nitty gritty stuff such as implementation, optimisation, outsourcing, raycasting and more! So get stuck in! "Today’s podcast is sponsored by Outspoken Audio and their dialogue production tool ‘XenoVox’ which is fully automated, standalone, dialogue production software, designed specifically for game audio. Reading directly from your Excel script, XenoVox records and prioritizes takes for an unlimited number of actors, and includes the feature called ADP, which plays-back existing assets to prompt other actors in the same conversation flow, as if they were all in the same room together – something to help in the 'new normal'. Currently working for both AAA and smaller projects alike, you can find out more with a free trial, tutorials and FAQ’s, on their website outspokenaudio.com." Voice Actor, David Bateson - Hitman 20th Anniversary Special
(TSAP S03E14) In this very special episode, Sam Hughes chats with actor David Bateson as he celebrates 20 years of portraying Agent 47 in the acclaimed Hitman series this year.  They discuss how it all began, some of the highlights, how the character has been a part of him for so long and... The Chuckle Brothers?? Plus so much more!  This is definitely one of our best episodes so don't miss this! "David Bateson has played the leading character of Agent 47 in the Hitman game franchise for 20 years since its first release in 2000. Agent 47 is an immensely complex character. David Bateson has brought a brooding, melancholic intensity to the Hitman character. His portrayal of a cloned assassin-for-hire is both dangerous and appealing in its flawed humanity. In the latest entry in the series HITMAN 2, the story of Agent 47 was told in a more personal way than in previous games -starting with his very recruitment as an assassin more than 20 years ago, through to the most challenging contracts that he has ever completed. Agent 47 must explore his own sense of identity, his relationship with his long-term handler, various intricate characters and roles as part of his professional work, and deal with the revelation that somebody has been tracking his movements for more than two decades. Having voiced Agent 47 for 7 Hitman games, David is intimately familiar with this enigmatic, multifaceted character. His prowess as an actor delivers a varied, different approach to many scenes than were originally conceived. Agent 47 is often required to take on the disguise of others and David convincingly plays a sundry of roles while on occasion, leaving room for the player to pick up a sense of the game’s very dark sense of humour and self-irony. As the beginning of the game starts 20 years in the past, David’s long and extensive history with the character allowed him to connect with the memories of voicing the character for the first time 20 years ago and build that into the sense of nostalgia that our players would have been feeling at the same time. He meticulously performs the different personalities and plot developments of Agent 47, whilst maintaining the integrity of the character. Added to which, his subtle and very dark sense of humor draws the player ever deeper into the world of assassination. Disguised as an Estate Agent, he calmly describes the dubious qualities of a house’s various rooms (as seen through the eyes of an assassin) to some prospective buyers while simultaneously planning an assassination, is just one such example. David has added a new level of depth to the already complex character of Agent 47 while strengthening the relationship of the fans to the personality of this trained assassin." (TSAP S03E02) Sam chats with composer, Matt Morton about his career so far and working on the incredible documentary APOLLO 11 that uses archival footage to look at the Apollo 11 mission to land on the moon led by commander Neil Armstrong and pilots Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins. "When Matt Morton first learned he’d been given the opportunity to score NEON's documentary Apollo 11, his first thoughts were, how can I put such a momentous event in our nation’s history into music, and how can I make my attempt unique? The score the composer created went on to win him a 2019Critics’ Choice Documentary Award. The documentary only uses archival footage from the 1969 mission to the moon, so Morton deliberately decided to only use sounds and instrumentation that existed during that era, but still set out to make the music sound futuristic. The synthesizer was born in the 1960s, which the composer utilized heavily, to create an avant-garde sound. “I looked at my music as being able to play the role of bridging the gap between 2019 and 1969. Even though I’m using dated instruments, I think it comes off as a bridge to modern people because I’m using modern musical idioms to communicate with them,” says Matt. A distinct symbolic element that Morton included in a cue was a chopped-up sonogram clip of his niece’s heartbeat, which he says is a reminder to our currently divided nation that we possess the ability to triumph, when we choose to unite. Please let me know if you might be interested in speaking with Matt Morton about his unique approach to scoring the historic Apollo 11 mission. Jacob Yoffee & Roahn Hylton - Composers (The Age of A.I., Sherwood, Best Shot)
TSAP S03E01 OUT NOW! In the first episode of the year (and decade 😲), we kick off season 3 with composers Jacob Yoffee and Roahn Hylton. In this episode Sam discusses with them about scoring YouTube's The Age of A.I. hosted by Robert Downey Jr.,how they began working together, how to compose as a duo, as well as how their contrasting backgrounds of hip-hop and classical lend to each other. "The composers each have their own musical specialty—Jacob has classical/jazz roots and Roahn has a hip-hop/pop background. Their expertise in opposing genres allows them to broaden the palette on any score they collaborate on and has also enabled them to have a better understanding of one another’s musical sensibilities. For The Age of A.I., Jacob and Roahn were originally asked to deliver a signature sci-fi sound, which is electronic-heavy. After their initial approach, the duo and their collaborators quickly realized that this wasn’t the right fit for the series. After a great deal of experimentation, they landed on a sound that was more human and organic. The resulting score is mostly orchestral and acoustic chamber music, with some electronic elements and perfectly speaks to the message of the docuseries."
