In this powerful story, Nkateko shared how she suffered academic disappointments early on in her tertiary education, which led to depression. One of the biggest challenges she had to face was reconciling her faith with the diagnosis. She couldn't understand why she would experience depression given her strong faith. Through extensive support from her family, Nkateko overcame the many challenges and difficulties that contributed to her depression. She offers some very useful advice for people who are going through depression.
Dr Tutula's long journey through severe depression
Dr Tutula's personal story illustrates the many push factors that contributed to her depression. Through the early symptoms and feelings of shame and guilt she experienced, her diagnosis during her fourth year in medical school, the denial phase where she did not accept the diagnosis, the limited support she received, and the lack of psychotherapy, she eventually got the help she needed when she earned a living and could afford private healthcare. It is ironic that medical students are prepared to become health providers, yet are not prioritized in terms of their own well-being and health. Aside from advocating for more awareness and support for medical students, she also offers some very useful advice for those struggling with mental health issues.
