Who Cares if You Listen?Oct 27, 2020
Limping back in
Just a brief update on some garbage audio to let you know where I've been for two years, and to express my desire to get back into it.
BONUS - Episode 0 of "Uncommon Classics ft. James Deaville"
This is a side project I'm working on with Dr. James Deaville, musicologist and my old professor at Carleton University. We're look at B-list and made C- and D-list classical composers that you might have never heard of!
In this episode, we tease apart the premise, and I test out using a piece of Paul Dukas to see how seamlessly I can add music into an episode.
Ep. 31 - Ft. Jasper Boychuk
Happy 2022!
Jasper is an engineer with the Federal Bridge Corporation, and a father of two. We went to high school together. I was intensely curious about his involvement with the Green Party of Canada, as well as his beekeeping. He also does other cool stuff too. Give it a listen!
Episode 30 - a Year in Review
I sit down in my basement after a four month hiatus and contemplate the nature of life and the future of my podcast.
Episode 29 - Jon Fraser and Keith Galbraith - A ONE YEAR restropectacle outdoors
Technology.
Man, I was angry with all the problems with the audio, which is probably my fault for bringing my laptop outdoors next to a firepit.
Jonathan was my original guest. He is now a big shot on Twitch. Catch his stream with Sean Sweeny here:
Episode 28 - Arthur Fels
Dear God in heaven this took a lot of time to edit.
Arthur is a lawyer who has a lot of opinion and a great public speaking voice. He's also crashed a Star Trek convention before, which should come as a surprise to no one.
Check out his work profile if you want to see him in a grey suit: Arthur D. Fels | Loeb & Loeb LLP
Episode 27 - Sam Popowich
I've known Sam since grad school days over a decade ago. He is a systems librarian at the University of Alberta, while also completing his PhD in political economy at the University of Birmingham. We talked politics, academia, and a bit of musicology.
Check out all his stuff at (spopowich.ca).
Episode 26 - Wesley Modes
Wes Modes - Artist, Historian, Educator. Captain of the Shantyboat Dotty. I wanted him on as a guest because I saw a sick youtube video all about riding shantyboats and learning about the history of river people in the United States. When he agreed to come on my podcast I was floored!
We talked river people and shanty boats, but spent a bunch of time talking gentrification, race, train hopping, higher education...this was a truly special chat and I hope that you enjoyed it.

And as a bonus, the origin story of Dotty:
Episode 25 - Claude Bélisle
Claude Bélisle is a retired civil servant turned artist, who works in coloured pencils. We talked about the urge to draw, synesthesia, and what making it as a "real" artist means to him and I. Links to his works:
Ep. 23 - Alan Thomas
Episode 22 - John Hemingway
John Hemingway is one my oldest squash rivals. Off the court I consider him a good friend. He's a civil servant by day, but by night he has been known to do woodcarving and woodturning. We've talked in passing about his craft before, but I really wanted to do a deep dive into it. We also discussed his connection to Letterkenny, Rugby, and snowshoeing. We did not discuss Ernest Hemingway, of whom I'm told he is no relation. This was a fun episode to record.
Episode 21 - Nélia Teixeira
Nélia is a lawyer, a hacker, a designer, and a budding futurist. We talk about analyzing long term trends in the future, and what all the buzz is about NFT these days!
You can find her at https://legalbydesign.io/ or on Twitter: Nélia Teixeira (@legalbydesign) / Twitter
Episode 20 - Sherif Rizk
Sherif is a lawyer, father-to-be, and a great friend of mine. We talked about his (soon to be rebooted) show, "The Rizk Assessment," Egyptian culture and politics, learning to speak Arabic, and the crossroads between politics, culture, and Hollywood! We even bring up CSIS and Bernie Goetz, for a timely cultural reference.
Check out Sherif's stuff here: The Rizk Assessment
Episode 19 - Dr. Anthony Moretti
Anthony has a PhD in Mass Communication from Ohio University, and teaches journalism in the Communications School at Robert Morris, in Pittsburgh. His research is largely in the field of sports journalism, and he's a big CFL fan (which is how we met).
We talked about Cold War sports propaganda, steroids, Pete Rose, Tony DeAngelo, Artemi Panarin, and the future of journalism, and shared our love and hope that the CFL gets back on its feet.

Episode 18 - Now with a laugh track!!
Back with another solo episode, I talk about the perils of getting guests, my short fuse, and also why me sitting in my basement complaining about banks and phone companies hasn't produced real change...yet.
Episode 17 - Daniel Tarof
Dan is a musician, writer, and all around good guy. His jazz licks and musical comedy stylings harmonize perfectly with his unique perspective on life and the world more generally. This was a really fun podcast to record. His internet persona is "Coffeejazzdude." Take a look at some of his music over here:
Episode 16 - Ft. Dawn Xanklin
Dawn is a stand-up comic, a writer, an improvisor, an actress, and much much more. We talked about the local arts scene in Ottawa, the dearth of women of colour in the comedy circuit, and how that may be changing. But most exciting for me, we talked about the ways in which we create and stay connected in COVID times, which is not always an easy feat.
Episode 15 - Lorenzo Patino
A Californian Linguist turned Canadian Sheriff, turned paralegal, turned stand up comic. Lorenzo is a good guy, and has had many twists and turns in his life story. We talked kicking people out of their homes, what life post-COVID will be like. We also talked about our kids and our dreams of strapping SUPs to the top of camper vans and being professional nomads. And we also managed to squeak in some stand-up shop talk.
Episode 14 - THE ONE WITHOUT A GUEST
Due to a host of logistical issues, I didn't have a guest lined up for this week, but I decided to record anyway. I talked about the challenges of finding someone I wanted to talk to, some new projects that I'm working on in the podcast sphere, and some books that I've been reading that I think would be of interest to others.
Episode 13 - Sean Sweeney
Sean works in Digital Production in the Montreal film industry. We talked the art of filmmaking, his podcast Watch / Rewatch, microphone envy, and stand-up comedy.
Episode 12 - Michelle Desbarats
Michelle is a poet and artist based in Ottawa. Her debut collection of poetry "Last Child to Come Inside," was published by Carleton University Press in 1998. Here is a Worldcat link to where you can find a copy close to you: http://www.worldcat.org/oclc/957463516
Episode 11 - Stefan Geiger
Stef and I went to high school together. He lives in Toronto, and does some kind of business thing that requires an MBA. I wasn't quite able to discern what it was, except that it's a teaching role. I think you need to reach OT7 to decipher what a "consultant" is.
If you listen to the end of the episode, you hear a cameo appearance from my cat!
Episode 10 - Ari Black
Ari is a Web Marketer, Photographer, Comedy Impresario, and self-proclaimed Foodie. His work profile, if you want him to do magic for your business:
Ari Black | WebMarketers - Team - WebMarketers
Episode 9 - Caryma S'ad
Caryma is a lawyer, comedy impresario, and satirist. She went to law school with me. She enjoys pro wrestling, and I believe she has a cat named Zuko. I honestly only remembered that after I published this episode, and I'm mortified that I didn't talk about Avatar at all in that hour+ podcast.
I digress. Her website is https://www.sadvocacy.com/. Check her out and subscribe to the social media things!
Episode 8 - Tony Clement
Former Provincial and Federal Cabinet minister, my old squash partner at the RA Centre, and IG influencer Tony Clement. Every that could possibly have gone wrong with uploading the podcast did. I sound like I'm phoning into my own show from a port-a-john, but I think that the content more than makes up for it.
Episode 7 - Ian Mendes
Ian Mendes is one of my favorite sports broadcasters and an all around nice guy. He gave me a Sens jersey and as a thank you, I forced him to come on this podcast. Listen to him on TSN 1200 on your old, wood paneled AM radio, or use the iHeartRadio App.
Episode 6 - Zac Delong
Zachary Delong: husband, father, philosopher, chess player, and apparently lawyer.
We talked about The Grand Tour, fatherhood, the philosophical debates of Causality, and vomit. We drank Nita Brewery's Cronk style beer while doing so, but you can't see it because I don't save video.
Episode 5 - Arthur Fels
Audio was a little wonky, but the experience was a blast.
Arthur is a lawyer by day. This is his work profile in case you wanted to know what he looks like: https://www.loeb.com/en/people/f/fels-arthur-d
Episode 4 - ft. Adam Saikaley
EPISODE 3 - Ft. Daniel Nadeau
Daniel Nadeau is a writer, novelist, and painter. He does not have a website but let me know if you want to be put in touch with him. I would love for more people to see his work.
EPISODE 2 - ft. Duane "The Boozin' Blogger" McMullen
Duane is a standup comic, YouTuber, and occasionally beer drinker. His Youtube channel, Duane's World, can be found at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnRHGKQVFP8e543Ft4wlktQ.
EPISODE 1 - Ft. Jonathan Fraser
Jon hosts "Watch Rewatch" together with Sean Sweeney on FB Live. I've known him since Kindergarten. Each one of these is a learning process where hopefully the audio (and eventually the video) mature as I do along this path.
Episode 0 - What is this Podcast?
Explaining what the title is, and what my ambitions are for "Who Cares if you Listen?" going forward.
