S4E04 Kakuma Refugee Camp - Home is People with Nhial Deng
“I aspire to a world where everyone, everywhere lives a life of dignity and young people have a safe space to lead and drive positive change in their communities”.
In George's last episode as a Podcast host, he chats with Nhial Deng. Nhial has been a refugee for nearly half of his life. Nhial arrived at Kenya’s Kakuma Refugee Camp in 2010, at only 11 years of age. Fleeing his village in Ethiopia after an armed militia attack, he walked hundreds of kilometres for days, alone and without family, to reach Kenya.
A large camp in Turkana County in northwestern Kenya, Kakuma is home to around 160,000 people. It was built in 1992 following conflict and unrest in Sudan, Ethiopia, and Somalia.
Today, Nhial heads the organisation Refugee Youth Peace Ambassadors, which aims to promote peace in Kakuma, and also delivers mentorship and empowerment activities for young people. Nhial also works to shift the narrative on refugee issues by amplifying the voices of other young people in the camp. He seeks to empower youth as the leaders of today that they are to make a difference.
George chats to Nhial as he waits in a hotel quarantine, before starting his studies in Journalism and International Studies at Huron University College in Canada.

S03E09 Eco-activism through films and travel with Simon Straetker
Simon Straetker is a filmmaker, tireless explorer and eco-activist known for creating inspiring short films at the furthest corners of earth. He is widely recognized for shooting elusive subjects—extreme adventurers, wildlife, boundless landscapes—and for asking pressing questions. Namely, how can we compel people to fall in love with nature again?
For the past five years, Simon has been searching for the answer. In 2012, he co-founded the Pangaea Project e.V., an international youth network dedicated to ecological change, which organises conservation projects for curious youth in Brazil, Serbia and South Africa. In 2013, Simon’s visually stunning short film about Germany’s Black Forest, his home, propelled him forward in the filmmaking world. He was awarded the German Conservation Award, Google Zeitgeist Award, and has recently been included in Forbes’ 30 under 30. Then he leveraged this newfound success to co-found Abenteuer Schwarzwald, a multimedia brand that seeks to combine his two greatest passions—eco-stewardship and film making. The project’s humble aim is to inspire young people in Germany about the Black Forest, using youth camps and social media to show them that you don’t have to hop on a plane to experience nature, and that grand adventures can be found in whatever slice of wilderness is closest to home.

S02E11 Creating Impact Through Water Solutions with Kevin Sofen
Do you just expect clean and safe drinking water to come out of the tap? Can you imagine if one day it didn't?. One in nine people lack access to safe water across the world. This became more than just a statistic to this week's guest, Kevin Sofen, after a trip to China and Ghana in 2011. The impact of consuming dirty water cripples a community’s ability to develop out of poverty, cascading into numerous health and economic problems.
Kevin is the founder of a social enterprise called Wristsponsible, a global movement actively implementing water solutions while empowering individuals to work together for a water responsible world.
Beyond his side hustle, Kevin’s day job uses virtual reality to help first responders, including fire firefighters and paramedics, to simulate and respond to risks. This conversation is an incredible reminder that it is possible to have social impact through our work, side hustles and day to day interactions.
