Welcome to the first interlude episode of season 2! Due to an unfortunate family emergency, Scott was unable to make our regular recording day so I stepped in and gave a monologue on how you can ask good questions and give quality answers when interacting with the online community.
While this advice is aimed at the Genesys community specifically, the advice is universally applicable to any fandom for any game system!

Welcome back to Excess Advantage! Today, Scott and I discuss stealing from other games: what to steal, what not to steal and how to do it well. We discuss how to mitigate changes to the at-the-table mechanics as well as stealing prep/behind-the-scenes material whole-cloth from other games.
Specific items discussed:
The Perilous Wilds, a Dungeon World setting creation supplement
Elite Dangerous RPG, which has some of the best solar system creation rules I've ever seen
Stars Without Number, which has a great system for not only populating a cluster of star systems but also for figuring out what the main planet is like
Scott's Traveller sector generator, for automating the sector creation for Mongoose Publishing's second edition of the Traveller RPG

In today's episode, I am not only joined by everyone's favourite part-time host Scott, but Sam Stewart himself! Sam is back to answer all our questions about Android: Shadow of the Beanstalk!
It's going to be a long one today, so I hope you enjoy spending the next hour with us!
Welcome to another great episode! Today I am once again joined by Scott and we discuss the magic system in Genesys. We go in-depth about how it works as well as the whys it works.
One of the big things we talk about towards the end is the post by /u/greatfrito with a table for making your own magic implements!
In February 2019, Scott and I did a Genesys master class on setting creation. Today we proudly present part 1 (of 2) of that talk.
The class itself went for over an hour and a half, but I was able to distill it down into two episodes of just over a half hour each! This episode is more scattershot than prior, mainly because there is a live audience we were interacting with and answering questions as they arose.
If you're interested in joining us for further master classes you can find myself on Twitter or join the Facebook Group, Discord server or Subreddit to interact with the community!
Today is the ultimate episode in the Adversaries series in which Scott "DrainSmith" and I build one nemesis each. We also get to talking about what makes for a good nemesis, rival or minion. It's a great episode and a wonderful conclusion!
In this episode, Scott shamelessly mentions his Dispensary of Genesys which is a one-stop shop for all amazing things Genesys!
Also, you might have noticed the new artwork I have for the podcast! Thanks to Scott for that!
Welcome to the penultimate episode in the Adversaries series! Today I am joined by none other than Scott "DrainSmith" himself as we build a few adversaries! During the build process, we not only tell you what the numbers are but why we choose what we do and workshop things a bit.
Do note, though, that the adversaries Scott gives us are straight from his Something Strange setting while my adversaries are off the cuff. Since it takes longer than just half an hour to design two minions, two rivals and two nemesii, it's been broken up into two episodes. So keep a look out for the exciting conclusion next time!
Welcome to the penultimate episode of season 1 of Excess Advantage! This episode is an extra-special one because of the number of co-hosts I have: 3 of the mods from the Discord server/FB group/subreddit and 3 from FFG! That's right, join us as we chat with Sam Stewart, Tim Cox and Tim Huckelbery!
We discuss so many things in part 1 of the chat that I can't even begin to enumerate them. You'll just have to have a listen for yourself!
Also mentioned in this episode is the Discord server where this live chat took place, the Facebook Group and the subreddit. Come join us if you haven't already!
Part II of my delve into making adversaries. Today is all about how to create them. I go step-by-step, following the book, talking about how each step works, with examples along the way.
Just remember two very important points:
• Step 1: Develop a Concept is the most important step. It informs all the decisions you make
• Your PC sheets are the best guidelines you have. What works for one group might not work for another
Today's episode is the first in a series of 3 as we delve deep into adversaries and how they work.
Part 1 is all about the mechanics of adversaries: how minions, rivals and nemeses work mechanically, as well as what they can bring to your encounters.
Also in this episode, I talk about joining us on various platforms.
Today's episode is all about making your own setting. I talk about my process and share how I use it to create both my Titanfall: Genesys setting as well as a play-by-post I'm running. Each one has different needs and thus are treated differently.
Genesys Discord server
Today I delve into the short, but dense, Social Encounters chapter. Don't let the 7-page size fool you: it's packed with great information for how to socialize in Genesys. From the simple to the complex. From the quick-and-dirty encounters to the set-piece encounters. It's all here.
I do have to apologize for my voice, I was getting over a head cold or something when it was recorded, so I do sound off and stutter more than usual. I hope that doesn't put you off of the episode, though!
Today I am joined by Adam from the Force Majeure podcast (https://forcemajeurepod.com/) and we talk about making stuff up!
I talk a bit about my work-in-progress Titanfall: Genesys (https://github.com/c-bec-k/TitanfallGenesys) mod and we talk about his conversion from a Pathfinder game to Genesys, along with a bit of brainstorming a PC sentient rat swarm.
Welcome back to the discussion episodes! Today I am joined once again by Devon as we welcome him into the fold! Some of y'all may remember that he was on episode one of the podcast interviewing me about Genesys since he wasn't familiar with it. Well, this time I'm interviewing him about his Genesys experience!
After we met our new hero, M'gann, the party continues their quest to find not only Cylric, but to find answers. On the trail of the rogue druid, however, they are waylaid by more of his insidious minions.
Will the team learn to work together in this new party dynamic? What does M'gann bring to the table? Will Maug ever be able to pet a polar bear? Found out now!
This episode we talk about creating characters for your Genesys game. The ins and outs, the goods and betters, the fun and fancy-free!
Also in this episode I ask you, the listeners, about what you want to hear more of: discussion episodes or live play…or if it's good the way it's been going. Click on that Contact link above to send me your thoughts.
Greetings and welcome back to the live play series! Now that the combat chapter has finished it's time to get back to Fantasy Landia and see how our heroes are doing.
Today introduces a new character played by Rich Howard (@Umbralwalker on twitter) playing M'gann. A cleric of the stars—no relation to the DC character ~_^
Join us as our established heroes meet their new friend and adventuring companion!
Welcome to the final installment of the combat chapter. Wow, that one sure took a while, huh? There are a lot of fiddly bits in combat and now you know them all!
No special show notes today, just an longer-than-normal episode length.
Welcome to part 2 of my coverage of the combat chapter. Pretty much the entire episode deals with making combat checks. There are so many moving parts that this one aspect of the game takes up an entire episode by itself!
Without further adieu, let's jump into part 2 of Combat Encounters.
Welcome to the first episode covering Chapter 6: Combat Encounters. There's just way too much stuff in that chapter to fit into a 20-minute episode while still doing it justice, so I had to chop it into three parts.
In part 1 I discuss what a combat encounter is, how it's set up, how to determine who goes when, and what you can do.
This is a rather exciting episode for me! I have six (!) new reviews over on iTunes. Thank you so much to those who wrote a review, it really means a lot to me to read them.
Reviews aside, our heroes are battling for their lives against the giant snowman and Sylric's toys-come-to-life! Will the PCs bet them, or will they lie in a toy-strewn grave, cold and forgotten? Find out now!
During the reviews, I do mention the other Genesys podcasts I'm aware of, so here they are:
The Dice Pool Podcast
Finding the Narrative
For this episode, Devon returns to talk with me about characterization. That is, coming up with your character's backstory, their appearance and their outlooks and personality. We discuss quite a few places where you can draw inspiration besides just the Genesys core book, including:
Fate Core Character Idea and Phase Trio
20 Questions from Legend of the 5 Rings (you can download the 5th edition beta here)
13th Age's one unique thing
GameMaster's Apprentice Base Deck (also with fantasy, age of sail, sci-fi, and steampunk varients)
TVTropes.Org (specifically the personal appearance tropes)
Our intrepid heroes have survived an attack by wild wolves, but what about the missing children? What about Silric? What's going on?
In this episode, the PCs get closer to the answers to these questions and more! Stay tuned to find out!
Today's episode is my first listener-requested episode! The listener (I forgot who you are, sorry!) wanted me to cover combat, so here is what I hope to be part 1 of 2. This episode is all about how to inject more narrative flair into your combats and how to avoid boring encounters.
In the near future I'll cover the mechanics of combat, but today it's all about the narrative, baby. Also, my first ever iTunes review is in! Thanks, MW1880, whomever you are!
Last time, we meet our heroes. In todays episode, the PCs have their first encounter with the wilds—and the players have their first encounter with the core mechanics! Fun is had by all, except Maug who is left scratching his head as to what could possibly be happening with the children…and his old friend Cylric.
In today's episode, we delve into spending advantage and threat in both combat and social encounters. While I do talk about the tables in the book, I also go into more detail about how to spend them in other ways.
This episode we dig deep in Part I: Chapter 1, "Core Mechanics":
What's with the funny symbols?
How Do I interpret the dice?
How the heck do I form my dice pool?
I apologize for the length of this episode, but I didn't want to cut it into two pieces since the core mechanics are, well, core to how the game plays. It's just under 29 minutes in length.
Today is episode 1 of my winter-themed live play! It was a blast playing and I hope to be able to do more one-shots like this in the future!
Discussion Points in the episode:
• I have a patron! Please visit my Patreon page if you would like to support the show and gain access to the patron-only Discord
• The players for this game were found on the Redemption Podcast Discord server. It's a great Star Wars live play. If you like Genesys, the NDS and/or Star Wars it's worth a listen!
There are no questions this week, but if you have one please drop me a line!
Welcome to the second episode of Excess Advantage! In today's episode, I delve deep into GM territory and discuss how to customize Genesys to meet your needs. This trek takes us to Part III, Chapter 1 in the book.
Creating your own skills, archetypes/species, talents, gear and adversaries are all discussed. While this chapter is in the GM's Toolkit part of the book, don't forget that players can use it, too! If they have an idea for their character let 'em use the tools to make it and provide it for GM approval.
Welcome to the first episode of Excess Advantage! In this episode, Devon, a long-time friend and co-host of the Shark Bone Podcast, asks me questions about the Genesys RPG. He asks good questions and I hope it helps all y'all learn more about what the game—and this podcast—is all about.
