Seven years ago, Brandon Beack's Olympic dreams were shattered when a gymnastics accident left him paralysed. Now, the 24-year-old has set his sights on qualifying for next year's Paralympic Games in Tokyo. He has recently been selected to represent South Africa at the Para Athletics World Games and is jetting off to Dubai in November. Congratulations Brandon!
Beack, from Somerset West, was a gymnast gearing up for the Western Province trials before tragedy struck. The former Reddam House pupil had achieved his Western Province colours for eight consecutive years and dominated the gymnastics nationals for three consecutive years.
I met Brandon the day after his 24th birthday recently (and served him an awful cup of coffee) - I was blown away by his inspiring message of hope, his incredibly positive outlook on life and his determination to achieve no matter what circumstances he faces. He has forged ahead with the support of friends and family, and his belief in himself is rock-solid. Today, he is the South African T52 wheelchair record holder for the 100m, 200m and 400m disciplines. He is also the T52 record holder for shot put and discus.
Brandon is not only a talented athlete, but also the founding member of Walking with Brandon in Cape Town, an NPO that seeks to empower South Africans with neurological disabilities by offering advanced, financially accessible outpatient rehabilitation. You go you good thing!
Willie Richards is one incredible human being. He has recently cycled 755 km from Stellies to Plett...on a mountain bike....and then did 13 ultra distance marathons back on foot - UNSUPPORTED, to raise funds for a cause he believes so passionately in, which is African Tails. Willie is a big supporter of their work as they try to end suffering and neglect at the root of the problem by mass sterilization and educational programs in rural areas.
