Slopes, Streets Sports - Freddy Hoare - SQI Jackets
Freddy Hoare caught my attention earlier this year with his slick promotional posts talking about his new brand SQI ( pronounced SKI). With enthusiasm and vision he and his team have drawn some very well deserved attention to a jacket design that easily transitions from Slopes - Streets to Sports.  Make sure you check out not only the fantastic work that Freddy and the SQI are doing (@wearesqi www.wearesqi.com)  But also check out the other brands SQI are working with:  Arrow Town Drinks - @arrowtowndrinks arrowtowndrinks.co.uk  My Boonies - @myboonies www.myboonies.com  We Are SQI, a UK based start-up here to blur the lines between skiwear, streetwear and sportswear. We’re on a mission to reimagine the boundaries of a ski brand, and our debut collection of limited edition multi-functional winter sports jackets suitable for everything from piste-to-pavement launched in 2021. SQI jackets are unisex, made from recycled plastic bottles and can be purchased with wireless phone charging technology. Our jackets have been designed to protect you from the worst weather around, and optimised to make a stylish fashion statement whether you’re on the slopes, in the city, or playing/watching winter sports. The Secret of Handmade Skis - Rupert Gammond PFD Skis (Pt 2)
In the second part of our conversation, we learn more about the plans for PFD skis now people have the chance to go skiing again. PFD is not just about quality skis and snowboard, it really is about building something bigger; a community who's common interest lie in enjoying the Mountains and seeking the best they have to offer - both in product and experiences. I had the honour of meeting Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD,  a number of years ago and from the very start was struck by his passion and dedication to skiing and to that of making his own skis. Making skis of any kind is a huge undertaking - but building them in the UK in a limited quantity, focusing on using products like Bamboo - is a whole other level. After finishing a product design degree, Rupert Gammond, founder of PFD, went straight to the mountains. Over the course of six winters, both passions of creativity and freeride skiing merged together to produce fresh, purposeful designs with a pure, minimal approach. In 2012 Pure Freeride Design was born out of a young designer’s passion for quality craftsmanship coupled with an equal passion for skiing.  After finishing a product design degree,PFD began its journey to create handmade skis in a purpose-built workshop, driven towards the perfect blend of materials, design, and a ‘no gimmick’ attitude to freeride skiing. You can find out more about the skis and the process here: https://www.pfdskis.com/

The Art Of Managing Brands - Syndicate Brand Partnerships - Jason Summerfield
Many times, I have the chance to speak with individuals who work directly for a brand, or group of products related to a single brand. This week, I had the chance to speak with Jason Summerfield who, after after spending years working for AMER Sports, went his own way & started Syndicate Brand Partnerships. It's not easy finding the brands to work with, which ones do you click with and do they make money; where do you start?? Jason takes us on his journey and shares some of the brands he's working with and looking to launch & grow here in the UK. Not only that,... he shares his story of all the work he's been involved with during the pandemic.

"We make products, to help make change" - Rory Atton - Dewerstone
I love that I have the opportunity to speak with wonderfully motivating people like Rory Atton from Dewerstone. His initial inspiration to start Dewerstone, came from his opportunity to attend a brand event with Sweet Protection. Coming away from that experience he felt deeply connected not only with the brand itself – but moved that a brand could really bond with people and share a message & connection. Though he may have spent time fitting ski boots earlier in his career,… he is now based in Princetown, Dartmoor National Park & he is making an impact in the lives of of ordinary people across the globe. Through his work and effort and that of is customers and community; last week alone they fed over 1000 people in Indonesia and continue to support families in need. Take some time, and listen to this humble and engaging character who through the work of his brand Dewertone is making a real difference.

Insights from around the Globe - Daniel Bogue
Daniel Bogue – NZSIA examiner, Technical team member, President of the NZSIA The Joys of modern technology allowed me to catch up with Daniel from the other side of the globe as he embarks on the ski season in New Zealand. It had been far too long since we caught up - but always a pleasure!  Daniel started skiing at the age of 11 on a school ski trip. He loved it so much he convinced his family that it was a sport they should all do. Since then its been all downhill. (Skiing Downhill) . Both Daniel and his brother carried on to become NZSIA examiners and eventually trained there parents to become instructors through the Rookie Academy at Treble Cone. Once Daniel completed his degree he set off skiing in Japan, Canada the United states and more recently China. Daniel will always call Wanaka home and rates Treble Cone as one of his favorite mountains to ski and train on. Daniel still works for the Rookie academy and is an active examiner. Having two small children means he doesn’t get to ski in the Northern Hemisphere as much as he would like but he loves the fact that 3 generations of Bogues get to ski together in NZ all because of a School ski trip. Daniel traveled to Bulgaria as part of the NZSIA Interski team and has been elected to President of the Board of the NZSIA. www.rookieacademy.com www.nzsia.org www.Atomic.com ____ Many thanks to our Sponsor Wolf and Grizzly. https://www.wolfandgrizzly.com If you want to get out and enjoy all the best our natural world has to offer – check out the cooking options from Wolf and Grizzly. Shred & Butta - Jim Stewart - Wax was only the Beginning
A number of years ago I had the opportunity to meet Jim Stewart from Butta and at that time he was working in UK retail, and was developing his own wax brand – Butta. With his "hands on" way of doing things, Jim was at home servicing skis in the day time and building a brand empire in the evening. Having gone from strength to strength he continues to have a love for the mountains, and genuinely loves sharing and spending time with people who enjoy snow & the great outdoors! One Tree at a Time & Boot Lab - Gavin Fernie-Jones
Recently I had the privilege to speak with Gavin Fernie-Jones from One Tree at a Time where he shares his vision of a future that helps us reduce our impact on the Environment while still enjoying snow sports. In addition, the store and organization he operates works with suppliers and forward thinkers on how to deal with excess ski clothing and other items which allow us to get outside. The concept seeks to change the way businesses operate, and working with the talent and skills of the local community for the benefit of everyone. Oh.... and he also runs a VERY successful ski boot shop too – The Boot Lab. Today being Earth Day, this is a really relevant conversation and I hope you’ll join in the discussion. https://onetreeatatime.fr https://thebootlab.co.uk Many thanks to our Sponsor Wolf and Grizzly. https://www.wolfandgrizzly.com If you want to get out and enjoy all the best our natural world has to offer – check out the cooking options from Wolf and Grizzly. Dion Taylor
In the autumn of 1985 Dion Taylor travelled from his home in New Zealand to London England where he started work for Snow+Rock. It was there at the newly opened store in the London Trocadero centre that his 27 year journey with Snow+Rock began. From his start working on the shop floor in the equipment department fitting boots & skis, to leading the company for many years, he embodied the ethos of work hard and play hard. With the growth in the 80’s and 90’s of snow sport participation and easier travel; Dion was part of a team of equally enthusiastic and passionate people ( who you’ll hear about)  - and together they shifted the snow sport retail landscape which we still see today. www.snowandrock.com __ Thank you to our sponsor Wolf and Grizzly If you are looking to make the most of your time outdoors this summer, and make the most of your food – check out www.Wolfandgrizzly.com for better way to cook. Darren Hardy - From Strength to Stength
Exercise and Activity are Powerful Medicines. I was inspired by this week’s guest Darren Hardy, when I saw that as an Ex serviceman during lockdown he was out helping families in his community and using his talents to raise money. Not only was he helping those families whom were less fortunate, he was on a mission to raise money for Help for Hero’s and other notable charities. His superpower? His mindset!  The ability to push through incredible physical challenges of endurance to achieve a goal & the challenge in front of him. Even during the lockdowns of 2020, he’s tackled some never before endurance events and set world records along the way. One of the driving forces for him has been to raise awareness of Mental Illness and PTSD, and to lead by example that Exercise can REALLY make an impact to turn people’s lives around. In these unprecedented times, when things may be tough, a voice of hope and inspiration is always welcome. @darren_hardy4 #fortitudefront https://fortitudefront.com/ https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/ Documentary https://endurancesportstv.vhx.tv/perseverance  Just giving https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/darren-hardy7 Thank you to our sponsor CroftWatches www.Croftwatches.com Use code LEGEND25 for 25% off your next purchase

Speaking with Adam Renshaw of Falke, not only does he share how much pressure your feet undergo in a day (I was shocked at this!) but realise how much fluid your feet produce. The key here is to understand how important that first layer is against your skin, ;especially in a pair of ski boots!! Though it may be controversial…… you too can find what team Adam supports!!! 😉
